Chapter 15

The red ledger remained with Elias for a year.

I never asked for the original.

He eventually brought it to me himself.

“Why now?”

“Because you stopped trying to own it.”

Fair.

I opened my father’s handwriting.

Not just money.

He had recorded disagreements.

Names of children supported.

Widows helped.

Capos rewarded.

Mistakes.

One note about Celeste surprised me.

CELESTE CONFUSES PRESERVING FAMILY WITH PRESERVING CONTROL.

My father saw it.

Years before I did.

Another:

OWEN WILL FOLLOW WHOEVER MAKES HIM FEEL NECESSARY.

Accurate.

Then one about me.

VICTOR THINKS SILENCE IS PATIENCE. SOMETIMES IT’S AVOIDANCE.

I closed the book.

Even dead, he found me.

Maya read that line later.

“Accurate.”

“Everyone is enjoying this too much.”

She smiled.

We copied the financial history necessary to restore support.

Then I asked Elias what should happen to the original.

He shrugged.

“Not mine.”

I looked at Maya.

She said:

“Archive it.”

Not hidden.

Not sacred.

Accessible to whoever needed to understand the history.

The red book stopped being secret power.

It became context.

That mattered.

Sadie saw it once.

“What book?”

“Grandpa’s notes.”

“Boring?”

“Very.”

She walked away.

Perfect.

A ledger that once terrified adults meant nothing to the child they planned to govern through it.

Exactly right.
