Chapter 14

Owen never apologized.

That simplified things.

He moved to another state.

Retained personal money.

Lost Avellino authority.

He occasionally sent messages accusing me of destroying my father’s legacy.

I ignored most.

One I answered.

My father abandoned the regency idea.

Owen replied:

He got weak near the end.

There it was.

The belief that change equals decline.

I deleted the conversation.

Richard and Thomas eventually returned to limited roles.

Not command.

Advisory only when asked.

Anthony left completely.

Caleb apologized to Nora Bell and returned money he had received improperly.

Patrick did neither and vanished from family events.

Different consequences.

No single punishment template.

Maya interrupted.

“Finish carefully.”

I almost laughed.

He changed the sentence.

Growth.

Sadie turned five.

No succession celebration.

No heir portrait.

No symbolic ring.

She got a bicycle.

Pink.

With training wheels.

Celeste sent a gift.

Maya asked Sadie whether she wanted to open it.

She did.

Inside was a doll.

Nothing political.

No note.

Perfect.

Sadie called Celeste to say thank you.

Maya stayed beside her.

I stayed out.

May you like

Boundaries do not require permanent silence.

They require choice.
