Chapter 13

Celeste asked to apologize to Maya.

Maya said no.

Three months later, Celeste asked again.

Maya said no.

Five months.

Maybe.

Important difference.

They met in the conservatory.

Same room.

No donor dinner.

No Owen.

No Sadie.

I stayed nearby because Maya asked.

Celeste entered slowly.

The orchid racks had been replaced.

The old fabric frame was gone.

Maya sat where she chose.

Celeste did not.

She waited.

“Sit,” Maya said.

Permission.

Celeste obeyed.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya looked at her.

“For what?”

Good.

Celeste started with the easy version.

“For frightening you.”

Maya shook her head.

“Specific.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“For tying you to the chair.”

Maya waited.

“For using Sadie.”

More.

“For trying to make Victor doubt you.”

More.

Celeste started crying.

“For thinking your marriage made you an obstacle.”

There.

Maya finally nodded.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Then she asked:

“Why did you hate me?”

Celeste looked shocked.

“I didn’t.”

Maya almost smiled.

“Fine. Why did you treat me like I was temporary?”

Celeste answered after a long pause.

“Because women who marry into families change men.”

Maya looked toward me.

Then back.

“Yes.”

Celeste frowned.

Maya continued.

“So do children.”

“So do deaths.”

“So does age.”

“So does truth.”

Then:

“Change isn’t theft.”

Celeste cried harder.

That was her deepest belief.

Maya had taken Victor away from the old family structure.

Sadie took him further.

In reality, life had moved.

Celeste tried to freeze it by controlling succession.

Impossible.

They talked twenty minutes.

When it ended, Maya did not hug her.

May you like

Celeste did not ask.

Progress.
