Chapter 8

Maya reacted quietly.
That frightened me more than rage.
She stared at the page.
Then asked:
“How?”
Elias answered.
“They planned to make you look unstable after tonight.”
Of course.
The candle scene.
If Victor arrived late enough, perhaps Maya would be found screaming.
Sadie crying.
Celeste claiming Maya endangered the child.
Another manufactured story.
But I entered too soon.
Maya understood.
“They wanted Sadie to look afraid of me.”
Elias nodded.
My stomach turned.
Celeste interrupted.
“That wasn’t the plan.”
I looked at her.
“Then what was?”
She said nothing.
Maya stood.
“Say it.”
Celeste looked at her with contempt.
“You married into something you never understood.”
There it was.
The sentence she had probably wanted to say for years.
Maya stepped closer.
“I understand it now.”
Her voice stayed controlled.
“You need my daughter without me.”
Celeste’s face hardened.
“You’ve made Victor sentimental.”
Maya almost laughed.
“I made him a husband.”
Then:
“Sadie made him a father.”
She looked at Owen.
“You call that weakness because neither role gives you control.”
I loved her in that moment more than I could explain.
Not because she defended me.
Because she finally spoke without asking whether she belonged at the family table.
She did.
Then Elias explained the removal strategy.
Maya would be accused of mismanaging household access.
A staged security breach.
A missing charity payment.
A rumor she secretly contacted her own relatives about taking Sadie away.
Nothing individually decisive.
Together, enough to make elders demand separation “for the child.”
Maya looked at me.
“Would you have believed them?”
Hard question.
I answered truthfully.
“Not all of it.”
Not enough.
She understood.
“Some?”
I hated the answer.
“Maybe.”
That silence was mine to carry.
Celeste smiled faintly.
There.
Her real confidence.
Not that I hated Maya.
That family history could make me doubt her long enough.
I looked at my wife.
“I’m sorry.”
She nodded once.
Not forgiveness.
Acknowledgment.
Then I turned to Celeste.
“You built this plan on me distrusting my wife.”
May you like
Her smile disappeared.
“Bad calculation.”
