Chapter 9

The sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long, sharp shadows across the heavily fortified Moretti estate, yet the interior remained flooded with bright, cinematic white light. Raffaele stood in his private study, a massive room lined with dark mahogany bookshelves and rich leather furniture. He had removed his tailored suit jacket, the unbuttoned collar of his dress shirt exposing the elegant, dangerous tattoos creeping up his neck as he poured himself two fingers of scotch from a crystal decanter.

He didn't drink. He simply stared at the amber liquid, his mind operating at a terrifying, tactical speed.

The heavy oak doors opened, and his lead bodyguard, Dante, stepped into the room. The thirty-five-year-old white American man wore a grim expression on his fair face.

"The courtyard is cleared, Boss," Dante reported, standing respectfully near the desk. "The disgraced capos have been escorted off the property. The estate is on full lockdown. But we have a critical situation."

"Speak," Raffaele commanded, his deep, raspy voice filling the quiet room.

"Before we confiscated Grant's phone, we found a series of encrypted outgoing messages," Dante explained, his American accent tense. "He wasn't just abusing the child for his own amusement, Raffaele. He’s been coordinating with the Chicago syndicate for months. They promised to back his play for the throne in exchange for the western ports. Vanessa was complicit. They were trying to break the child to prove your bloodline was weak."

Raffaele slowly lowered the glass to the desk. He leaned forward, resting his tattooed hands flat on the polished wood. "They sold out this family... for a promise of power."

"It gets worse," Dante warned, stepping closer. "The Chicago outfit had men positioned near the city limits, waiting for Grant to give the signal that the coup was successful. When he went dark, they realized the plan failed. They are mobilizing, Boss. They are viewing this internal purge as a massive moment of weakness."

Raffaele let out a slow, dark chuckle that contained absolutely no humor. The sound sent chills down the spine of his bodyguard.

"They view me... as weak," Raffaele whispered, his cold, intimidating eyes narrowing into lethal slits. "Because I chose... to protect my daughter."

"They have a massive standing army, Raffaele," Dante cautioned. "If we go to war over this, the streets will run red. We just stripped half our command structure."

"A structure... that was built on sand," Raffaele stated, his voice dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice. He stood up, his deeply masculine, intimidating presence radiating through the study. "If Chicago wants a war, I will give them an apocalypse."

He walked around the desk, his polished leather shoes making slow, deliberate sounds against the hardwood floor.

"Dante," Raffaele said, stopping inches from his lieutenant. "I want you to mobilize the strike teams. Arm every loyal soldier on the payroll. We are not going to wait for Chicago to breach our borders. We are going to take the fight to their front door."

May you like

"A preemptive strike?" Dante asked, a fierce, loyal fire igniting in his eyes.

"Total eradication," Raffaele corrected softly. "I want their warehouses raided. I want their lieutenants neutralized. By midnight tonight, I want the Chicago outfit to understand exactly what it costs to threaten the Moretti bloodline."
