Chapter 10

The transition from a quiet, luxurious estate to a military staging ground happened with terrifying efficiency. The bright video colors of the cinematic lighting illuminated the courtyard as dozens of heavily armored black SUVs lined up, engines idling with a low, menacing growl. Men in dark tactical gear moved swiftly, loading heavy weaponry and securing communication lines.
Raffaele walked out of the massive front doors, his tailored dark suit jacket back on, his presence commanding absolute silence from his soldiers. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he adjusted his cuffs, his fair, rosy face set in a mask of unyielding stone.
Dante stood by the lead vehicle, holding a secure tablet.
"The strike teams are in position, Boss," Dante reported, his voice tight with adrenaline. "We have targets locked on three of Chicago's primary money-laundering fronts in the city. If we hit them simultaneously, we cripple their operational funding."
"Execute," Raffaele commanded smoothly, his eyes devoid of any human mercy. "Leave no survivors. I want the message to be unequivocal."
"Yes, Boss," Dante nodded sharply, speaking rapidly into his radio to give the green light.
As the convoy began to roll out, the heavy iron gates of the estate swinging open to release the wave of violence onto the streets, Raffaele turned back toward the mansion. The purge had begun, but his primary concern remained secured behind the reinforced walls of his home.
He walked through the quiet, brilliantly lit corridors, bypassing his study and heading directly to the private residential wing. He quietly opened the heavy mahogany door to Lily's bedroom.
The room was softly lit and perfectly peaceful. Lily was fast asleep in the center of her large, plush bed, her fair cheeks clean and glowing with innocent health. She clutched a soft teddy bear, her breathing deep and even, completely unaware that her father had just mobilized an army to avenge her tears.
Adrian sat quietly in a chair near the window, a baseball bat resting against his leg, keeping a silent, fiercely loyal vigil over his little cousin. He stood up quickly as Raffaele entered.
"She went to sleep easily, Uncle Raffaele," Adrian whispered, his voice respectful.
"You did well today, Adrian," Raffaele murmured, his raspy voice warm and protective. "You showed the heart of a true leader. Get some sleep. The house is secure."

He walked over to the bed and sat gently on the edge, resting his elbows on his knees, his hands clasped together, the family signet ring catching the dim light. The veteran Mafia boss, a man feared by thousands, simply sat in the quiet room, watching his daughter breathe.
The monsters within his own family had been banished to the dark, but Raffaele knew there were always more waiting outside the gates. The war with Chicago was coming, bringing fire and blood to the city streets. But as long as he drew breath, the light in this room would never go out. He was ready for whatever came next, a lethal guardian standing watch over the only thing that truly mattered.
