Chapter 8

The silence stretching across the salon was absolute and apocalyptic. The fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives remained paralyzed on the burgundy velvet sofas, the festive Christmas reception completely obliterated by the exposure of such calculated, psychopathic manipulation.
Dorian Thorne did not yell. He did not explode into physical violence. The quiet, deep, controlled manner in which he operated was far more terrifying than any shouted threat. He moved with preternatural speed, stepping smoothly into the space to position his broad, masculine body deliberately between Serena and Aria.
It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Serena's authority in a single, fluid movement. He remained beside Aria, his towering frame offering an impenetrable wall against the furious fiancée.
He looked down at his three-year-old son. Owen, entirely unaware of the catastrophic betrayal he had just exposed, stepped closer to Aria. The little boy rested his round, rosy cheek against the soft, beige fabric of the fake maternity cushion, treating it like a comforting blanket. He stood safely under the golden Christmas lights, sheltered by his father's imposing silhouette.
Aria’s shoulders eased slightly. The paralyzing terror that had gripped her for eighteen hours finally began to recede. She was standing behind the apex predator, and he had chosen to defend her. She let out a long, shaky breath, her clear eyes fixed on Dorian’s broad back.
Dorian watched Serena with a cold, unwavering stare. His sharp, angular jaw was set in stone.
"You attempted to manipulate the bloodline of this syndicate because of your own pathetic, desperate insecurities," Dorian stated with brutal, surgical precision. "You locked a defenseless woman in a closet to silence her. You used the concept of my unborn child as a political bargaining chip. You are a monster."
"I am trying to build an empire with you!" Serena cried, tears of frustration ruining her flawless makeup. "You are losing your edge! The other families are laughing at you for stalling the merger! I took control because you were too weak to enforce the alliance yourself!"
"You have shown me," Dorian replied softly, his pitch-black eyes promising absolute ruin, "that you are a fatal liability."
Under the weight of that lethal, promising stare, the color drained entirely from Serena’s aristocratic face. She backed away until her spine hit the edge of a carved walnut table, realizing with a sinking horror that the political immunity she had relied upon was entirely useless inside the walls of the Thorne estate.
"This reception is concluded," Dorian announced, shifting his dark gaze to the fifty elite guests seated around the room. "Everyone who does not carry the Thorne name, or work in my personal security detail, will vacate this salon immediately."
Chairs scraped frantically against the polished marble floors. Men and women paled in terror as they abandoned their champagne glasses and festive cheer. They rushed toward the massive double doors, eager to escape the impending explosion of violence before they were forced to take a side in a mafia civil war.

"Dorian, you are making a catastrophic mistake," Serena hissed, attempting to salvage her dignity as the room rapidly emptied. "My father will hear of this. The Hale family will not tolerate this level of public disrespect. You need our shipping routes."
"I would burn every ship in the harbor before I let you sleep under my roof again," Dorian replied coldly.
