Chapter 1

The luxurious salon of the Thorne mansion was a breathtaking display of wealth, power, and calculated intimidation, masked beneath the festive veneer of a crowded Christmas reception. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the high, frescoed ceilings, flooding the entire room with a warm, brilliant golden light. The illumination caught the edges of the gilded mirrors lining the walls, reflecting the polished cream marble floors and the meticulously carved walnut furniture. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras, casting soft, flickering shadows across the burgundy velvet sofas where the most dangerous men and women in the city sat. A towering Christmas tree commanded the far corner of the salon, sparkling with thousands of golden fairy lights and thick crimson ribbons. Evergreen garlands framed the massive stone fireplace, filling the air with the sharp, clean scent of pine.

At the center of this opulent gathering stood Dorian Thorne. Thirty-three years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss at the height of his reign. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp, angular jaw dusted with extremely short, meticulous stubble. His dark hair was naturally swept back, framing a face that commanded absolute, terrifying authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers. Artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with deliberate, striking patterns, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The holiday arrangements are absolutely flawless this year, Dorian," an older capo named Marcus remarked, raising his crystal glass of bourbon. His crisp American accent cut clearly through the ambient hum of the room.

"Thank you, Marcus," Dorian replied slowly, his deep, controlled voice effortlessly drowning out the surrounding chatter. "I believe Christmas should be a time of overwhelming beauty. We have much to celebrate this year."

"Indeed we do," Marcus nodded respectfully. "With the Hale syndicate officially merging their assets with ours, your upcoming marriage to Serena guarantees our dominance on the eastern seaboard. And with a new heir on the way, your legacy is completely secured."

Dorian’s dark eyes shifted toward the center of the room. At twenty-nine, his fiancée, Serena Hale, was a vision of high-society perfection. She wore a luxurious, structured emerald satin gown with a full skirt that gracefully concealed the slight swell of her supposed pregnancy. Her fair, rosy skin glowed beneath the warm light, and dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was impeccable, radiating a polished, reassuring smile as she greeted the syndicate members.

"Yes," Dorian murmured, his voice lacking the expected warmth of an expectant father. "A legacy is everything."

Dorian took a slow sip of his drink, his eyes scanning the elegant crowd gathered near the velvet portrait bench. Despite the overwhelming success of his political maneuvering, a persistent, unsettling tension gnawed at the back of his mind. He looked toward the heavy mahogany doors leading to the servant’s quarters.

"Have you seen Aria tonight?" Dorian asked, turning slightly to address his lead enforcer, Silas, who stood a few paces behind him.

"No, Boss," Silas replied in a low rumble. "She was scheduled to manage the dessert buffet, but she hasn't reported for her shift. The head butler assumed she fell ill."

Dorian’s jaw tightened. Aria Bennett was a gentle, beautiful maid who had quickly become a fixture in his son’s life. She was meticulous, fiercely reliable, and completely devoted to three-year-old Owen. For her to vanish during the most important reception of the year without a word was not just uncharacteristic; it was alarming.

"Find her," Dorian commanded softly, the negative space tattoos on his fingers flexing as he gripped his glass. "Search the estate. I want to know exactly where she is."
