Chapter 4

The high, innocent voice sliced through the venomous atmosphere near the Christmas tree like a blade of pure light. Aria and Serena both froze, their heads snapping down toward the sound.

Waddling proudly across the polished marble floor was three-year-old Owen Thorne. The toddler was a vision of absolute innocence, with round rosy cheeks, soft dark curls, and tiny, pronounced dimples. He was dressed impeccably for the holiday in a soft cream knitted shirt, a little red plaid waistcoat, dark corduroy trousers, and soft brown boots.

But it was not the boy's festive outfit that caused the blood to completely drain from Serena Hale's aristocratic face. It was the object the toddler was happily clutching against his chest.

Owen was proudly hugging the beige, fabric-covered maternity cushion. The thick straps trailed on the marble floor behind him as he walked. He had clearly wandered into Serena’s open dressing room while the nanny was distracted, found the strange, soft object inside the open dressing bag, and decided to treat it like a brand-new toy.

The toddler toddled directly into view, stopping just a few feet away from the two women. The warm golden light from the towering Christmas tree illuminated the beige cushion perfectly.

Owen looked up at Serena, his round face beaming with a massive, completely sincere smile. He patted the soft, rounded cushion with his little hands, entirely oblivious to the catastrophic syndicate politics he had just dragged into the grand salon.

"Auntie's tummy!" Owen announced cheerfully, his young American accent breaking the silence with natural, adorable toddler pauses. He squeezed the cushion tightly. "Baby out!"

The words dropped into the immediate vicinity like a live explosive charge.

Aria’s breath caught in her throat. Her clear, expressive eyes widened in absolute shock as she stared at the maternity pad. The physical proof she had desperately needed had just been delivered into the middle of the crowded reception by the mafia boss's own three-year-old son.

Serena stood paralyzed. Her fingers, still wrapped tightly around Aria’s wrist, began to tremble violently. The luxurious emerald satin gown suddenly felt like a suffocating shroud. She stared at the beige cushion in the toddler's hands, her mind frantically racing to comprehend the sheer, devastating impossibility of the moment. The secret she had built her entire future upon was currently being used as a teddy bear by a toddler.

The ambient noise of the nearby conversations suddenly felt muted, distant. The elegantly dressed guests standing near the velvet portrait bench had not yet noticed the bizarre scene unfolding by the tree, but the ticking clock of exposure was deafening.

"Give that back to me right now," Serena whispered, her voice cracking with raw, unadulterated panic.

"No, my baby," Owen giggled, taking a clumsy step backward in his soft brown boots, hugging the cushion tighter against his red plaid waistcoat. "Play with baby."

Aria felt a sudden, fierce surge of protective instinct. She knew that if Serena got her hands on that cushion, the truth would vanish back into the shadows, and her own life would be forfeit. She pulled her arm, trying to break free from the fiancée's grip, but Serena held on with the desperate, feral strength of a cornered animal.
