Chapter 7

The devastating confession dropped onto the polished marble floor like toxic acid. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the surrounding guests. The murmurs of the elite syndicate members died instantly. The room was suddenly paralyzed. The woman destined to be the queen of the Thorne syndicate had just been publicly accused of faking a pregnancy to manipulate the boss into a permanent alliance.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Serena shouted, stepping forward, her diamond earrings swinging wildly. The aristocratic polish was completely gone, replaced by a feral mask of desperation. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Dorian! I have never seen that object before in my life! She is trying to turn you against me to extort this family!"

"Do you expect me to accept the premise that a three-year-old child and a maid conspired to invent such a specific, treacherous lie, Serena?" Dorian asked, his deep voice effortlessly drowning out her frantic excuses.

"He is a toddler, Dorian!" Serena cried, pointing a shaking finger at Owen. "Children have vivid imaginations! He found some trash from the servants' quarters! You cannot take the word of a confused boy and a lying maid over your future wife!"

"Is it your custom to blame my son for the treacherous filth that you orchestrated in my own home?" Dorian asked, his tone so terrifyingly calm that several guests physically recoiled.

"I am protecting this family!" Serena shrieked defensively, slamming her manicured hands against her emerald satin gown. "She is overstepping her boundaries! She is constantly coddling the boy! I had to assert dominance to remind the staff of their place!"

Dorian finally turned his head slowly. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands flexed as he shifted his dark, sweeping gaze from Aria to the woman in the satin gown. The air in the room turned freezing cold despite the roaring fires.

Serena’s eyes briefly flicked down toward the beige cushion still clutched proudly in Owen’s small hands. The physical evidence of her betrayal was undeniable. When her gaze returned to Dorian, the last remnants of her careful, polished smile faded entirely. She lifted her chin, attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic defiance, believing her family's power could still shield her from his wrath.

"You were pulling away from me, Dorian," Serena stated, her American accent dripping with a manufactured, icy pragmatism. "The alliance between our families was faltering. You refused to set a wedding date. I had to secure my position. I had to force your hand."

She hadn't denied the accusation; she had merely attempted to justify it as a necessary political and personal survival tactic.

"A baby," Serena confessed, her voice hard and uncompromising, "was my only leverage."

The sheer audacity of the confession, delivered in the presence of the mafia boss and his entire syndicate, was staggering. She had built their entire future on a monstrous, calculated lie.
