Chapter 5

The standoff beside the sparkling Christmas tree descended into a terrifying, silent struggle. Serena’s fingers tightened brutally around Aria’s wrist, her manicured nails digging painfully into the maid's fair skin. The physical pain was sharp, but Aria refused to cry out, her eyes darting frantically between the enraged fiancée and the innocent toddler.
Serena took a quick, aggressive step toward the three-year-old boy. The structured full skirt of her emerald gown swept across the marble floor. She forced her facial muscles to comply, plastering a grotesque, trembling mask of a smile across her face.
She looked directly at Owen, attempting to project maternal warmth, but producing a reassuring smile that arrived slightly too late and failed entirely to reach the cold, panicked terror in her eyes.
"Give that back, sweetheart," Serena commanded softly, her American accent strained and breathless. "That belongs to Auntie Serena. It's... it's a special pillow for my back. Please, give it to me."
"No!" Owen pouted, his tiny dimples deepening as he took another step backward, clutching the beige maternity cushion stubbornly. "My baby pillow."
"Owen, listen to me," Serena hissed, the polished facade cracking as she reached her free hand out toward the boy. "Give it to me right now."
Aria struggled against the grip on her wrist, her rumpled white apron pulling askew. "Don't yell at him, Serena. He's just a baby."
"Shut your mouth!" Serena snapped, her gaze locked entirely on the damning piece of fabric.
But the commotion, the strained voices, and the aggressive posture of the woman in the emerald gown had finally drawn attention.
From across the grand salon, Dorian Thorne had been concluding his conversation with the capos. His sharp, angular jaw tightened as his dark eyes swept the room, continuing his search for the missing maid. His gaze landed on the towering Christmas tree, and the scene unfolding in its golden light snapped his attention entirely to the present moment.
He saw his fiancée forcefully gripping the wrist of the very maid he had been looking for. He saw the disheveled, terrified state of Aria's uniform. And he saw his three-year-old son backing away from Serena in distress.
The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a profound, dangerous questioning. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands flexed as he gripped the edge of a nearby carved walnut table. The tension in his broad shoulders coiled like a steel spring. The evening was no longer a celebration; it was a tribunal, and the apex predator of the city had just recognized a threat.
Dorian did not hesitate for a single microsecond. He moved with preternatural speed, crossing the polished marble floor in massive, predatory strides. His tailored dark three-piece suit cut a formidable silhouette through the crowded room.

As Dorian stepped directly beside Aria, his towering presence completely eclipsed the two women.
Serena gasped, her eyes widening in absolute horror. She instantly released Aria’s wrist, snatching her hand back as if the maid's skin had burned her. She stood frozen, the color completely draining from her aristocratic face.
