Chapter 6
Robert arrived furious that I had summoned him during my own wedding.
That detail amused me.
He entered through the side corridor wearing a formal suit and the expression of a man offended by inconvenience.
Then he saw Nora.
His face changed.
Not much.
Enough.
I held up the USB.
“You recognize this?”
“No.”
I played the audio.
His own voice filled the hallway.
Silence.
Robert looked at Vivian.
She looked away.
There.
No loyalty between conspirators once evidence becomes audible.
I asked:
“What becomes easier after I sign?”
Robert smiled faintly.
“You’re assuming context.”
“Yes.”
I leaned back.
“Give me another one.”
He said nothing.
Adrian placed the forged authorization in front of him.
Robert’s face remained still.
Too still.
“Did you write this?”
“No.”
“Did you plan around it?”
Silence.
Vivian finally spoke.
“He said nobody was taking anything.”
Robert turned sharply.
Good.
Let them fracture.
She continued.
“He said it was protection.”
I almost laughed.
Always protection.
“What protection?”
Vivian looked at me.
“In case you changed after marriage.”
“Changed how?”
She hesitated.
Robert answered.
“More centralized.”
I stared.
“I already control Whitmore.”
“That’s the problem.”
There.
The real grievance.
Robert believed I had concentrated too much authority in one branch of the family.
Old capos no longer had automatic vetoes.
Property decisions moved faster.
Private side arrangements had been cut.
He called it efficiency when I started.
Then he lost influence.
Now he called it danger.
“You needed Vivian inside my household.”
He did not answer.
“You needed one legitimate marriage signature.”
Still nothing.
“And then one crisis.”
Robert looked at me.
Finally honest.
“Yes.”
That answer silenced everyone.
Not murder.
Not necessarily.
Just a crisis large enough to make temporary authority useful.
Then temporary authority becomes normal.
May you like
Normal becomes permanent.
The wedding dress was camouflage for a coup built from routine.
