Chapter 11

Ethan wanted to know why the wedding stopped.
That question waited longer than the rest.
I found him in the bridal sitting room eating crackers beside Claire.
He looked at me.
“Grandpa, no wedding?”
“No wedding.”
“Because Vivian bad?”
Claire looked at me.
Children prefer categories.
Bad.
Good.
Safe.
Unsafe.
Adults complicate them.
I sat beside him.
“Because Vivian did things that hurt people.”
He nodded.
“Mommy?”
“Yes.”
“Me?”
I paused.
“She scared you.”
He nodded again.
Then held up the USB.
“USB helped?”
I almost smiled.
“Yes.”
His face brightened.
That worried me.
I did not want him learning secrecy made him powerful.
“You did the right thing bringing it to me.”
“Because I spy?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Because you saw Mommy scared and asked for help.”
That mattered.
He was not a little detective.
Not a future capo.
Not a hero because he carried evidence.
A child who trusted an adult with something frightening.
That was enough.
Then he asked:
“Mommy said you happy wedding.”
I looked at Claire.
She lowered her eyes.
I turned back to Ethan.
“Sometimes grown-ups protect other people’s happiness too much.”
He frowned.
I simplified.
“Mommy should have been able to tell me.”
“Why didn’t she?”
I answered honestly.
“Because I made it hard.”
Claire looked up.
That sentence belonged in the room.
Not hidden behind Robert.
Not blamed entirely on Vivian.
I had missed my daughter’s fear because I wanted my future to stay uncomplicated.

The cost had landed on her.
That part was mine.
