Chapter 5

Claire remembered the housekeeper.

Her name was Nora Pike.

She had worked in Claire’s apartment twice a week for almost a year, then disappeared three days earlier without collecting her final pay.

Claire thought it was strange.

Vivian called it unreliable staff.

I sent two men to find Nora.

They did.

At her sister’s house.

Terrified.

She refused to come until she heard my voice on the phone.

When she arrived, she looked at Vivian once and immediately moved closer to Claire.

That was enough.

“You hid the USB.”

Nora nodded.

“Why?”

“Because Mrs. Cross knew Claire’s phone.”

Vivian snapped:

“Liar.”

Nora flinched.

I looked at Vivian.

“Do that again and you leave the room.”

She went quiet.

Nora continued.

Vivian had pressured her for months to report Claire’s schedule.

Who visited.

When Ethan slept.

When Claire called me.

At first, Nora refused.

Then Vivian offered money.

Nora still refused.

Then came threats.

Not against Nora.

Against her sister’s lease.

Her nephew’s job.

Small leverage.

Enough.

Nora eventually agreed to report harmless things.

Then she began recording Vivian.

“Why?”

Nora looked at Claire.

“Because she was getting worse.”

The USB held four clips.

Not one.

Threats.

Questions.

Promises about marriage.

One recording captured a man’s voice.

Not visible.

Familiar to Nora.

He came to Claire’s apartment with Vivian twice.

I played the clip.

Low male voice.

Controlled.

Older.

“Once Marcus signs, everything becomes easier.”

I knew that voice.

So did Adrian.

My cousin.

Robert Whitmore.

Sixty-two.

Retired from daily operations.

Still powerful enough to open doors.

I looked at Vivian.

She finally looked afraid.

The bride was not building this alone.

She had been recruited.
