Chapter 2

The ceremony never began.
I did not cancel it publicly.
I simply let the silence do the work.
Guests were moved into the ballroom and told refreshments would continue while a family matter was handled outside. That was enough to keep panic from becoming spectacle.
Vivian hated that.
She wanted either marriage or humiliation.
I gave her neither.
I gave her waiting.
Claire sat beside Ethan at the guest-book table while one of my men collected every page from the marble floor.
No one removed anything from the building.
No one touched the USB.
No one called anyone outside.
I looked at Vivian.
“Who knew the folder was there?”
She smiled coldly.
“You think because you found it, you understand it?”
“No.”
I sat across from her.
“That’s why you’re still here.”
Her smile weakened.
Claire finally spoke.
“She kept telling me I would ruin Ethan’s future if I interfered.”
I turned.
“What future?”
Claire looked at the folder.
Vivian interrupted.
“She doesn’t understand business.”
I looked at her.
“Neither does a three-year-old.”
My eyes went to Ethan.
“He understood enough to bring me this.”
That silenced her.
Claire continued.
Vivian had started visiting her without me.
At first, the visits seemed friendly. Wedding planning. Family adjustment. Discussions about Ethan.
Then the tone changed.
Vivian began asking questions about which family properties were directly controlled by me, which required secondary approvals, which passed automatically through my signature.
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“You answered?”
Claire shook her head.
“Not much.”
“Then?”
“She started threatening custody.”
I stayed very still.
Claire swallowed.
“She said if I made trouble, she would make you believe I was unstable and take Ethan out of my house.”
Vivian rolled her eyes.
“Drama.”
Ethan looked up.
“She yelled at Mommy.”
Simple.
Clean.
Children do not understand strategy.
They understand tone.
I looked at Vivian.
“You were not only preparing papers.”
She said nothing.
“You were preparing a story about Claire too.”
That was worse.
