Chapter 16

Robert left New York.

Not exile.

Choice.

Without access, his name no longer opened enough doors to make staying comfortable.

Before he left, he asked to see me once.

I agreed.

He looked older.

Not weaker.

Just less surrounded.

“You really think Claire changed you.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“I think being wrong did.”

That made him laugh.

“At least you admit it.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the Whitmore crest on the wall.

“You centralized because you thought speed was strength.”

“I did.”

“And now?”

“Speed is useful.”

He smiled.

“Still stubborn.”

“Yes.”

Then I added:

“But speed without contradiction makes mistakes faster.”

That silenced him.

Robert looked at me for a long time.

“Your father would hate that sentence.”

“Probably.”

We almost smiled.

That was the strange thing about family betrayal.

Not every memory turns false.

Robert had taught me to shoot.

Taught me accounts.

Protected me once during a warehouse attack.

All true.

He also tried to hollow out my authority through deception.

Also true.

People do not become easier because they betray you.

Sometimes they become more complicated.

He left without apology.

I did not need one.

I needed distance.

When the door closed, I felt less triumph than expected.

Maybe that was progress too.
