Chapter 9

The bruises around Isabella’s wrist were not the worst injury.

Noah showed me that later.

We were alone in the lounge.

He climbed onto the sofa beside me and handed me the repaired paper flower Carlo had taped together.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes?”

“Mommy falls in closet.”

My body went still.

“What closet?”

“Dress room.”

“What happens?”

He looked nervous.

I softened my voice.

“You’re not in trouble.”

He nodded.

“Daddy closes door.”

My jaw tightened.

“With Mommy inside?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Noah did not know time.

Children measure in events.

“Until my cartoon finishes.”

Twenty minutes.

Maybe more.

I found Isabella afterward.

She knew immediately what Noah had said.

“Three times.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“When I refused to change clothes.”

“What was wrong with the clothes?”

“Short sleeves.”

My breathing slowed.

The bruises.

He created marks.

Then punished her if she wore anything that revealed them.

Closed room.

Long sleeves.

Back downstairs.

Perfect wife.

I looked at her.

“He hurt you, then made you responsible for hiding the evidence.”

She nodded.

That was the whole marriage in one sentence.

Grant called it privacy.

Vanessa called it loyalty.

Isabella had begun calling it normal.

May you like

Noah had not.

Thank God.
