Chapter 8

Vanessa had been encouraging him from the beginning.

She admitted it only after I showed her an old voice message.

Grant had saved it.

Maybe accidentally.

Maybe because insecure men like hearing encouragement repeated.

Her voice:

You’ll always be “Massimo’s son-in-law” until you make people say Hale first.

Then:

Noah is your chance. Raise him Hale. Let Isabella keep her sentimental Lombardi nonsense in private.

I stopped the audio.

Vanessa did not look ashamed.

“She married down.”

Isabella froze.

I turned.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa’s chin lifted.

“Grant had his own standing before her.”

“So?”

“Then everyone started treating him like an accessory.”

I understood resentment.

I did not accept retaliation.

“You decided my daughter should be reduced so your brother could feel larger.”

“She should’ve supported him.”

Isabella laughed softly.

Vanessa turned.

“What?”

My daughter looked at her.

“I covered bruises for him.”

Silence.

“I stopped using my name at events for him.”

Her voice strengthened.

“I let you call my son Hale-only for him.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Isabella continued.

“I shrank until there was almost nothing left, and he still felt small.”

Grant looked away.

That sentence broke through something.

Not enough for redemption.

Enough for recognition.

His problem had never been Isabella’s size.

It was his own emptiness.
