Chapter 12

Vanessa asked to apologize to Noah.
I said the decision belonged to Isabella.
Isabella said no.
Vanessa exploded.
“He’s my nephew.”
Isabella’s face remained calm.
“You slapped him.”
“He gave Grant garbage.”
I stared.
Even now.
She still hated the flower.
Why?
I finally asked.
“What offended you about it?”
Vanessa looked away.
Noah had made it for Grant.
Not me.
Not Isabella.
Grant.
A child’s affection.
Simple.
Unconditional.
Why would that anger her?
Then Isabella whispered:
“Because it had Lombardi written on the back.”
I looked at the taped flower.
Turned it over.
Crayon letters.
NOAH LOMBARDI.
My chest tightened.
He had practiced his name.
Vanessa saw it.
Tore it.
Then slapped him.
Not because the flower was trash.
Because the child wrote the name they had spent eight months teaching him not to use.
I looked at her.
“You struck a three-year-old over a surname.”
Her face hardened.
“He was confusing himself.”
“No.”
My voice dropped.
“He was remembering.”
Isabella started crying.
Noah had been absorbing the battle around his identity without understanding it.
His paper flower was not evidence he planned.
May you like
It was a child writing his own name.
And Vanessa could not tolerate even that.
