Chapter 14

Isabella chose separation.
Not immediately.
Three weeks later.
I did not ask her to explain.
She did anyway.
“I kept waiting for him to become the man he was after every apology.”
I understood.
“Who was that?”
“Gentle.”
She smiled sadly.
“Funny. Ashamed.”
Then she shook her head.
“But that version only arrived after he hurt me.”
There it was.
Kindness as recovery phase.
Not foundation.
“What did he say when you told him?”
“That I’m destroying Noah’s family.”
I looked toward my grandson playing on the carpet.
“What did you say?”
“That Noah already knew the family was broken.”
Good.
Children do.
They notice tone before adults admit pattern.
Grant asked for contact with Noah.
Isabella allowed short meetings later.
Her choice.
Supervised at first.
Not because I demanded it.
Because Noah did not want to be alone with him.

That was the rule now.
No child forced into closeness to prove adults had forgiven each other.
