Chapter 4

Vanessa denied helping.

Then I found the messages.

Isabella had kept screenshots in a hidden album on an old phone.

Not because she planned to expose Grant.

Because she needed proof for herself that certain conversations had really happened.

I understood that more than I wanted to.

One message from Vanessa read:

Wear the pearl cuff tonight. Your father notices everything.

Another:

Stop crying before Massimo arrives. If he sees your face, Grant will blame you for starting a war.

Another:

Noah needs to learn not to repeat private family matters.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.”

She stared back.

“I was keeping the peace.”

There it was.

Peace.

Meaning silence from the person being harmed.

Isabella spoke quietly.

“You told me if Dad found out, Grant would lose everything and it would be my fault.”

Vanessa’s chin lifted.

“That was true.”

“No.”

My voice stayed low.

“Grant loses things because of what Grant does.”

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand marriage.”

I almost smiled.

“I was married thirty-one years.”

Her mouth closed.

I looked at Isabella.

“What did Noah repeat?”

Her face changed.

“Things he heard at home.”

“What things?”

“That Grant called you an old king with no heir.”

My jaw tightened.

I had an heir.

Not in the childish sense Grant meant.

I had family, captains, structures.

But old men still obsessed over sons.

Grant knew it.

Then Isabella added:

“He said if Noah stopped being seen as Lombardi, people would eventually stop expecting anything from him.”

I understood.

Noah’s name was not hidden out of shame.

It was strategic.

Grant wanted my grandson invisible inside Lombardi succession politics.

May you like

Not because Noah threatened me.

Because Noah threatened Grant’s ambitions.
