Chapter 26

The grand foyer of the Marconi estate became a slaughterhouse. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the shattered mahogany doors and the pulverized marble floors. Raffaele and his elite guard formed an impenetrable wall of lead and steel, funneling the invading mercenaries into a deadly, inescapable crossfire.
"Reloading!" Vincent barked, ducking behind a ruined console table.
Raffaele stepped forward, covering his underboss with a steady, lethal stream of automatic fire. He was a force of absolute, terrifying destruction. Every time a mercenary managed to cross the threshold, Raffaele dropped them with surgical accuracy.
But as the firefight raged, Raffaele noticed a sudden, alarming silence from the east wing corridor—the route leading directly to the secondary stairs and the nursery.
"Carlo!" Raffaele yelled over the comms, trying to reach the capo assigned to the east wing. "Report your status!"
There was no answer, only a faint burst of static.
A cold, liquid nitrogen dread flooded Raffaele's veins. He abandoned the main barricade, leaving Vincent to hold the foyer. He sprinted down the dark, plaster-dusted hallways, his heart hammering against his ribs. He turned the corner and found Carlo standing by the open security door, lowering his weapon to let a squad of Commission soldiers into the house.

Carlo had been bought.
Raffaele didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. He raised his weapon and fired, dropping the traitorous capo instantly before turning his wrath upon the infiltrating soldiers.
