Chapter 7

"Don't open it, Domenico!" Camilla shrieked, struggling against her zip-ties. "He said if the wrong person opened it, the entire estate would burn! It’s a trigger!"

Domenico paused for a fraction of a second, his cold eyes assessing his cousin. Her terror was genuine, completely unfeigned. But Domenico Valenti did not take orders from blackmailers, and he certainly did not cower in his own home.

With a swift, precise motion, Domenico slid the silver letter opener beneath the flap of the yellowed envelope. The aged paper ripped with a dry, crisp sound. The red wax seal fractured and crumbled onto the mahogany desk.

Marco held his breath, bracing for an explosion that never came.

Domenico reached inside and pulled out a single, folded piece of heavy cardstock. It was not a bomb. It was not a digital drive. It was a handwritten note.

Domenico unfolded the paper. The handwriting was elegant, sweeping, and written in dark black ink. As he read the words, the blood in his veins turned to absolute ice. The deeply masculine, intimidating Mafia boss remained perfectly still, but the muscles in his jaw ticked violently.

"What does it say?" Marco asked, his voice trembling in the dark room.

Domenico did not answer immediately. He read the note a second time, ensuring he had not misunderstood the chilling message. He slowly lowered the paper to the desk, his eyes locking onto Marco and Camilla with a gaze so lethal it felt physical.

"It says," Domenico began, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper, "'The sins of the father will be paid by the daughter. The poison is already in the glass. Check the seating chart.'"

Camilla gasped, her fair skin turning completely white. "The seating chart... Marco crashed into the seating chart!"

"Poison?" Marco croaked, his eyes wide with horror. "Dom, I swear to God, we didn't know anything about poison!"

"You smuggled an assassination order into my house," Domenico said, his voice vibrating with a rage so profound it shook the room. "You helped someone coordinate a hit at my family’s wedding."

"We didn't know!" Camilla wailed hysterically. "He just said it was a message! We didn't know they were going to hurt anyone!"

"Who is the target?" Marco asked frantically. "Dom, who are they trying to kill?"

"The note says 'the sins of the father will be paid by the daughter,'" Domenico murmured, his mind racing through the guest list. There were dozens of fathers and daughters attending the wedding. But only one father had enough sins to warrant a hit of this magnitude.

Himself.

"Livia," Domenico breathed, the realization striking him like a physical blow. The blackmailer wasn't targeting a guest. They were targeting his three-year-old daughter.

"Oh my God," Camilla whispered, realizing the absolute magnitude of their mistake. "Domenico, we didn't know. I swear on my life, we didn't know they were after Livia!"

"Your life," Domenico said, pulling his tailored suit jacket tight, "is entirely forfeit."

He turned and bolted for the study door.
