Chapter 3

For a fraction of a second, the universe seemed to hold its breath. The bright, cinematic light of the ballroom illuminated the stark contrast between the two men. Marco’s fair face was flushed with panicked desperation, his fingers digging frantically into the sleeve of Domenico’s dark suit. Domenico remained perfectly still, holding Livia in his left arm, his right wrist caught in his cousin-in-law's desperate grip.
"Are you out of your mind?" a capo shouted from the crowd, stepping forward.
Domenico raised a single finger on his left hand, silencing the capo instantly. The veteran Mafia boss slowly, deliberately shifted his gaze downward. He looked at his trapped wrist, then slowly raised his eyes to meet Marco’s. The look in Domenico’s eyes was so overwhelmingly lethal that Marco’s breath hitched in his throat.
"You put your hands on me, Marco," Domenico whispered, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. "In my house. In front of my daughter."
"Dom, please, you don't understand!" Marco begged, his grip loosening as the reality of his mistake began to set in. "That envelope doesn't belong to you! You have to give it to me before this gets out of hand!"
"The only thing getting out of hand," Domenico said coldly, "is your lifespan."
With a sudden, explosive burst of raw masculine power, Domenico ripped his arm free from Marco’s grasp. The violent motion tore the cuff of Marco’s expensive shirt. Before Marco could even process the loss of his grip, Domenico pivoted his shoulder and drove one explosive, devastating punch directly across Marco’s face.
The sickening crunch of cartilage echoed over the silent ballroom. The sheer kinetic force of the blow lifted Marco off his feet.
Marco spun violently backward, his arms flailing through the air. He crashed directly into the tall acrylic seating-chart installation standing near the doorway. The massive, transparent structure was not designed to withstand the weight of a falling man.
The acrylic frame buckled at the center with a sharp, plastic shriek. Clear panels snapped loose from their hinges, shattering upon impact. Hundreds of beautifully printed guest-name cards burst across the marble floor like a sudden, chaotic snowfall. Satin ribbons unraveled through the air, tangling in the wreckage.
The entire lightweight structure folded completely over Marco as he crashed beneath it. The heavy acrylic panels pinned him to the floor amidst the scattered names of the Mafia elite. He lay motionless, blood pooling on his fair skin from his shattered nose.
Every single guest in the vicinity went entirely silent. The cheerful, bright colors of the wedding decorations suddenly felt like a grotesque backdrop to a murder scene. No one dared to speak. No one dared to breathe. The bodyguards stood at absolute attention, waiting for their boss’s next move.

Domenico stood perfectly still, his breathing completely controlled. He adjusted his hold on Livia, who had buried her face so deeply into his neck she hadn't seen the violence. He held the yellowed envelope securely in his right hand.
"Is there anyone else," Domenico asked the silent room, "who would like to take this from me?"
