Chapter 4

The silence in the ballroom was profound and heavy, broken only by the muffled, terrified sobs of the little girl in Domenico's arms. The capos and guests stared at the wreckage of the acrylic seating chart, their fair and rosy faces reflecting absolute shock. But the paralyzing fear that gripped the crowd did not extend to Camilla.
Seeing her husband bleeding and unconscious beneath the shattered plastic, Camilla’s panic morphed into sheer, unadulterated madness.
"Marco!" Camilla screamed, the sound tearing through her throat. She looked from her fallen husband to the yellowed envelope in Domenico’s hand.
Logic completely abandoned her. The instinct of self-preservation vanished, replaced by the desperate need to reclaim whatever damnation was sealed inside that paper. Camilla let out a feral, guttural cry. Her luxurious formal gown whipped around her legs as she lunged wildly for the envelope, her diamond rings flashing in the bright, natural light.
"Give it to me!" Camilla shrieked, her hands clawing the air, aiming directly for Domenico's face.
Domenico did not step back. He did not flinch. With the effortless precision of a man who had survived thirty years of underworld warfare, Domenico caught her wrist mid-air. His grip was like a steel vice, crushing the delicate bones of her arm.
"Let go of me!" Camilla wailed, thrashing wildly against his grip. "You don't know what you're doing, Domenico! You're going to get us all killed!"
"You struck my daughter," Domenico said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, dead calm.
With a sharp, violent motion, Domenico jerked her away from Livia to ensure the child was entirely out of the crossfire. As Camilla stumbled forward, off-balance and entirely exposed, Domenico drew his right hand back and delivered one thunderous, open-handed slap across her face.
The impact was deafening. Camilla’s head snapped violently to the side, her expensive diamond earrings flying into the crowd. She spun sideways, her high heels losing all traction on the slick marble floor.
She crashed sideways directly into the long, elaborate candle display that lined the entrance wall.
The lightweight wooden platform overturned instantly with a massive crash. Dozens of unlit decorative candles, heavy glassless lantern frames, and ribboned wedding programs exploded across the floor. White and red flower petals burst into the air like confetti, raining down as Camilla slid painfully through the scattered decorations. Her luxurious gown tangled in the wooden wreckage, and she collapsed in a pathetic, groaning heap, her fair skin bruised and bleeding.
There was no dialogue. The guests remained perfectly, horrifyingly silent.
Domenico stood tall, the yellowed, sealed envelope still unopened in his hand. He looked down at Camilla, who was gasping for breath among the crushed flower petals and broken lanterns.

"You didn't care about the vase," Domenico said, his voice quiet and absolutely lethal. "You were terrified of what was under it."
Camilla looked up at him, her face instantly becoming overwhelmingly frightened. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
