Chapter 7

The interior of the guesthouse was dimly lit by a single, flickering bulb hanging from the exposed wooden rafters. The air was stale and cold. In the far corner of the single room, sitting on a narrow, worn cot, was a woman. She was wrapped in a thin, tattered blanket, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. Her fair skin was pale and bruised, her once-vibrant hair dull and tangled. But as the heavy door creaked open, she slowly raised her head.
Julian froze. His broad, powerful shoulders went completely rigid beneath his tailored dark suit. The cold, perceptive eyes of the Mafia boss filled with an overwhelming, shattered emotion. It was her. The woman he had grieved, the woman he had buried an empty casket for. Clara.
"Julian?" Clara whispered. Her voice was incredibly fragile, raspy from misuse and dehydration, but the American accent was unmistakably hers.
"Am I truly looking at a ghost, or has my heart finally found its way home?" Julian asked. His deep, low voice broke on the final word, the measured pauses obliterated by the sheer magnitude of his relief.
He crossed the small, damp room in three massive strides. He dropped to his knees on the filthy floorboards, completely disregarding his expensive clothing. He reached out with his heavily tattooed hands, his fingers trembling violently as he gently cupped her pale, bruised face.
Clara let out a ragged, breathless sob, leaning her forehead against his. "She told me you knew. Natalia told me you ordered the boat to sink. She said you didn't want me anymore."
"Would I ever order the destruction of my own soul?" Julian asked softly, tears finally spilling over his dark lashes, tracing the sharp lines of his angular face. "Did you truly believe I could ever stop loving you?"
"I didn't want to believe it," Clara wept, her frail hands reaching up to grip the lapels of his suit jacket. "But she kept me locked in the dark for so long. I was so scared, Julian. I just wanted my baby."
Hearing the word "baby," Elise stepped quietly out of the shadows. The beautiful housemaid moved with graceful posture, bringing the sleeping infant into the dim circle of light. The softly rounded face of the child was peaceful against her sophisticated black maid dress.
Clara gasped, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated joy. She scrambled off the cot, her legs weak and shaking, and practically threw herself toward the maid.
"Is he safe? Is he hurt?" Clara asked frantically, her hands hovering over the sleeping boy.
"He is perfectly safe, ma'am," Elise smiled warmly, tears gathering along her expressive brows. With profound gentleness, Elise transferred the sleeping weight of little Miles into his mother's waiting arms.
Clara collapsed back onto the edge of the cot, burying her face in the soft fabric of the boy's tiny waistcoat, inhaling the scent of her child as she rocked him back and forth. The agonizing four months of separation had finally ended.
Julian stood up, looking down at his reunited family. The terrifying, lethal executioner had vanished completely, replaced by a fiercely protective patriarch. He turned his cold, perceptive eyes toward the open doorway, looking out into the darkness of the estate grounds where his men waited.
"Shall we return my wife to the warmth of her own home?" Julian asked, his voice returning to a steady, authoritative resonance.
"I will prepare the master suite immediately, Mr. Blackthorne," Elise replied, bowing her head slightly.

"Will you also prepare a room for yourself in the primary wing, Elise?" Julian inquired, looking at the housemaid with absolute, unwavering respect. "Does a woman who saves a family not deserve to live among them?"
Elise’s delicate cheekbones flushed pink, and she nodded deeply, honored to have secured a permanent, safe place within the formidable walls of the Blackthorne empire.
