Chapter 2

The bright, airy lighting of the dining hall seemed to sharpen, acting as a high-definition spotlight on the silent, domestic struggle occurring near the head of the table. Miles whimpered louder, his tiny hands gripping the crisp white collar of Elise’s uniform. The little boy's fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with exhaustion and overstimulation. The gentle golden warmth of the room did nothing to calm his rising distress.

"Elise, please take him to the nursery," Natalia instructed, her voice dropping into a harsh, hushed whisper that only the immediate circle could hear. Her sculpted burgundy satin gown rustled as she took a half-step toward the maid. "He is disrupting the entire flow of the evening. I specifically asked for him to be kept upstairs."

Elise’s expressive brows drew together in a look of profound empathy for the child. She did not argue with her future employer, but she knew the nursery felt cold and isolated to the grieving boy.

"I am so sorry, Miss Prescott," Elise whispered softly, her American accent carrying a delicate, strained vulnerability. "He just needed to see his father for a moment. He has been struggling to settle all day."

"Are my son's tears an inconvenience to your curated evening, Natalia?" Julian asked. His deep voice cut through the space, the measured pause striking like the toll of a heavy bell.

Natalia’s reassuring smile tightened significantly at the corners. "Of course not, Julian. I simply want what is best for him. A crowded, noisy room is no place for a baby who needs his rest."

"Is a dark, empty room a better alternative for a child who seeks comfort?" Julian inquired, turning his broad, powerful shoulders entirely toward the housemaid and his infant son.

Elise felt the crushing, terrifying weight of the Mafia boss's attention settle upon her. She took a slow, steadying breath, determined to quiet the boy before the situation escalated further. Shifting her weight, Elise settled Miles more comfortably against her chest. She wrapped her slender arms securely around his tiny waistcoat, pressing his cheek against her shoulder.

Then, barely audible over the clinking of silver cutlery, Elise began to hum.

It was just four quiet notes. A simple, descending melody that carried a soft, melancholic sweetness.

The effect on the child was instantaneous. Miles’s tense, tiny fingers immediately loosened their desperate grip against her white collar. His small body relaxed, the frantic energy bleeding out of his limbs as his heavy head rested peacefully on her shoulder. The boy recognized the sound; it was an anchor in the storm of the crowded room.

But the boy was not the only one who recognized the melody.

Julian Blackthorne went completely, terrifyingly still. The movement of his heavily tattooed hands ceased entirely. His cold, perceptive eyes widened for a fraction of a millimeter. The bright, luminous colors of the room faded into the background as his entire focus narrowed onto the beautiful housemaid standing before him.

It was not a popular lullaby. It was not a song played on the radio. It was a private, highly specific melody that his late wife had composed herself, humming it in the dead of night when their son refused to sleep. No one else in the world knew those four notes.

Natalia noticed the sudden, drastic change in Julian's demeanor. Her fair skin paled slightly under the warm golden light. She realized the danger immediately, her sharp mind calculating the threat. She needed to sever his train of thought before it fully formed.

Maintaining direct, unwavering eye contact with Julian, Natalia gave a small, dismissive smile.

"That’s just a nursery song," Natalia announced.

Her voice was lightly amused, carefully modulated to sound entirely unconcerned. Her lips held the sympathetic, reassuring smile of a patient future stepmother, but her eyes carefully and frantically searched his angular face for any sign that her deflection had worked. After finishing her sentence, she shot Elise a brief, venomous warning glance—a silent, absolute promise of severe retaliation if the maid dared to contradict her narrative.

Elise saw the glare. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but she kept her arms firmly wrapped around the sleeping boy, bracing herself for the collision.
