Chapter 3

The continuous action of the evening flowed seamlessly into a moment of absolute, suffocating tension. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt almost surreal against the dark, psychological warfare occurring at the head of the table. The clean whites of the damask linens and the polished highlights of the crystal stemware shimmered beneath the warm golden light, offering no shadows for lies to hide within.

Julian did not return Natalia’s smile. He did not acknowledge her dismissive explanation. The extremely short stubble on his sharply defined jawline seemed to harden into granite. He slowly turned his heavy family signet ring, the artistic tattoos on his hands flexing under the luminous chandeliers.

He moved his cold, terrifyingly perceptive gaze away from his fiancée. He looked directly at Elise.

Elise held his gaze, her heart plummeting into her stomach. She saw the deeply masculine, lethal power radiating from him, but beneath the cold exterior, she recognized a desperate, unyielding demand for the truth.

“Elise. Who taught you that?”

Julian’s voice was deep, quiet, and impossibly deliberate. The question dropped into the silent, luminous room like a heavy stone into still water.

Every single guest at the massive, crowded table stopped eating and speaking. The melodic hum of polite conversations died completely. Men in expensive formal wear and women in satin gowns turned their heads in unison, their fair, rosy faces locking onto the head of the table. The silence was absolute, heavy with the terrifying realization that the apex predator of their world had just halted his own engagement dinner to interrogate a servant.

Elise’s lips parted slightly. The bright, clear lighting illuminated the sudden, raw fear flashing across her delicate cheekbones. She drew a shallow, shaky breath, her slender figure tensing beneath the sophisticated black maid dress. She kept Miles securely supported against her chest, the weight of the sleeping child grounding her in the terrifying moment.

She was trapped. If she spoke the truth, Natalia would destroy her. The fiancée had already explicitly instructed Elise to dismiss the claims of the strange, broken woman staying in the estate's isolated guesthouse as the ramblings of a confused, unwell vagrant. But if she lied to Julian Blackthorne, she would undoubtedly forfeit her life.

Elise maintained direct eye contact with Julian, choosing the perilous path of honesty.

“The woman in the guesthouse.”

Her voice was soft and uncertain, breaking the ringing silence of the room like a shattering glass. The words were a quiet, devastating detonation.

After speaking, Elise’s eyes briefly and involuntarily moved toward Natalia, checking the blast radius of her confession. Natalia’s fair, rosy skin had flushed a dark, angry crimson, her chest heaving beneath her sculpted gown. Elise’s fingers tightened anxiously against the soft fabric of the baby’s blanket, seeking comfort, before she forced her gaze back to Julian.

Julian’s expression remained perfectly composed, but the air immediately surrounding him plummeted to absolute zero. He stepped forward.

He shifted closer to Elise and Miles, moving with a fluid, terrifying grace. In one deliberate, protective motion, Julian placed his broad, powerful shoulder entirely between Elise and Natalia. He was acting as an impenetrable wall, physically shielding his son and the brave housemaid from his furious fiancée.

Natalia realized the narrative was slipping rapidly from her manicured grasp. She forced herself to meet his cold, perceptive eyes, desperately restoring her reassuring, polite smile.

“She gets confused. She’s unwell.”

The words came smoothly off Natalia’s tongue, practiced and rapid. But her smile tightened significantly when Julian offered her a slow, searching, and absolutely lethal look. He didn't ask a question immediately. He simply let the weight of her lie hang in the luminous, golden air, waiting for the fragile foundation of her deceit to collapse.
