Chapter 7

The atmosphere inside the Caruso estate shifted instantly from a luxurious residence to a heavily fortified command center. The bright, cinematic afternoon light began to fade into the golden, dangerous hues of dusk. Dozens of white American men in professional dark suits moved through the corridors with lethal purpose, racking the slides of suppressed automatic weapons and donning tactical gear over their formal wear.

Dante bypassed the war room and walked directly to his private suite in the east wing. He needed to see her before he set the city on fire.

He quietly opened the heavy mahogany doors. The suite was bathed in warm, soft lighting. Maria, the housekeeper, was sitting near the large marble bathtub, wrapping a fluffy white towel around a freshly scrubbed Lily. The torn, filthy clothes had been discarded and burned in the fireplace.

When the door clicked, Lily looked up. Her bright blue eyes widened, and she scrambled out of the towel, running across the plush carpet in her bare feet.

"Daddy!" Lily cheered, throwing her arms around his legs.

Dante dropped to one knee, ignoring the crease in his tailored trousers. He caught her in a fierce, protective embrace, burying his face in her damp hair. He inhaled the clean scent of soap, the physical proof that the nightmare inflicted by his aunt was finally over.

"Are you feeling better, my sweet girl?" Dante whispered softly, pulling back to look at her fair, rosy cheeks.

"Yes, Daddy," Lily smiled, her innocent face completely trusting. "Maria gave me bubbles. Is the mean lady really gone?"

"She is gone forever," Dante promised, his heavily tattooed hands gently holding her small shoulders. "She will never ring that bell again. You are the princess of this house, Lily. No one will ever tell you otherwise."

He looked up at Maria, who was standing nervously by the bathroom door.

"Thank you, Maria," Dante said, his raspy voice carrying a profound, rare gratitude. "You risked your life today to show me those bells. You will be generously rewarded."

"I couldn't watch her suffer anymore, Mr. Caruso," Maria whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "She is just a little girl."

"Take her to the secure bunker beneath the wine cellar," Dante instructed, standing up to his full, intimidating height. The softness vanished, replaced by the hardened exterior of the Mafia Don. "The estate is going into full lockdown. Do not open the vault door for anyone except myself or Silas."

Maria nodded quickly, understanding the severe implication of the order. She gathered Lily’s clean clothes and hurried toward the secret access panel.

"Daddy, are you playing a game?" Lily asked, holding her favorite stuffed bear.

"Yes, little one," Dante murmured, offering a small, reassuring smile that didn't reach his cold eyes. "Daddy is going to play a very serious game tonight. Be brave for me."

As the heavy steel door of the bunker slid shut, securing his daughter in absolute safety, Dante turned his back on the suite. He unbuttoned the jacket of his three-piece suit, retrieving a heavy-caliber pistol from his shoulder holster. The time for diplomacy was dead.
