Chapter 1

The grand reception hall of the Caruso estate was awash in brilliant, cinematic light. There were no warm filters, no artificial yellow or orange tints; the sunlight poured through the towering arched windows in crisp, neutral white rays, perfectly illuminating the vibrant, bright colors of the lavish room. Dozens of guests, all white American adults bearing fair and rosy complexions, mingled gracefully across the polished marble floor. Dressed in formal evening wear, the Mafia family capos and their wives presented a portrait of aristocratic elegance, their sharp American accents blending into a sophisticated hum.

Dante Caruso stood near the towering stone fireplace, the undisputed king of his violent empire. At fifty-two, he possessed a rugged, movie-star handsome face—angular, with a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline, and a short, meticulously trimmed full beard. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, a few loose strands falling effortlessly over his forehead. He radiated a deeply masculine, terrifying power, amplified by the flawless tailoring of his dark three-piece suit. Artistic, refined tattoos crept up his hands and the sides of his neck, the dark ink stark against his fair skin.

He was concluding a quiet conversation with his underboss when a sharp, jarring sound pierced the ambient noise of the reception.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

The clear, high-pitched chime of a small brass service bell echoed from the far side of the room.

Dante turned his cold, sharp, intimidating eyes toward the sound. Sitting in a plush, velvet chair was his aunt, Helena Caruso. At sixty-four, she was a senior matriarch of the family, draped in an expensive formal outfit that reeked of old money. Heavy diamond jewelry adorned her neck, and multiple rings flashed on her fingers as she aggressively shook the small brass bell.

From the shadows of the arched hallway, three-year-old Lily emerged.

Dante’s breath caught in his throat. His daughter, the sole heir to his empire, was not wearing an elegant child's dress. Instead, she was dressed in torn, filthy clothes, looking more like an orphan from the streets than a Mafia princess. Her tiny hands clutched a stack of folded white linen dinner napkins. She rushed across the marble floor, her small, bare feet slipping slightly in her haste to reach the older woman.

"Here are the napkins, Aunt Helena," Lily whispered, her tiny voice trembling as she held the linens out.

Instead of taking them, Helena’s face twisted into a mask of pure, unwarranted malice. She reached out, her manicured fingers digging violently into the little girl’s thin arm. With a brutal, sudden shove, Helena forced the three-year-old downward.

Lily gasped, crashing onto her knees on the hard marble floor. The white napkins scattered around her dirty clothes.

"What took you so long, you little brat?" Helena demanded, her voice cold and merciless, carrying clearly over the sudden silence of the nearby guests. "When I ring, you have to run immediately if you want food."

"I'm sorry," Lily whimpered, staring at the floor, tears immediately welling in her bright blue eyes.

Dante did not say a word. The sophisticated hum of the reception died entirely. The terrifying Mafia boss moved with an explosive, lethal speed that shattered the civilized illusion of the afternoon.
