Chapter 8

The elders stood one by one, kissing Massimo’s signet ring in solemn, absolute allegiance before exiting the showroom, leaving only the Caradonna inner circle and the condemned prisoners in the quiet room.
Massimo stood up from the head of the table. He walked slowly down the length of the room, stopping directly before Grant Hale.
"You wanted to be a boss, Grant," Massimo said softly, looking down at his son-in-law with dead eyes. "You wanted to wield power over men. But a true boss protects his family. He bleeds so they don't have to."
Massimo reached down and seized Grant’s left hand.
With two fingers, Massimo gripped the gold wedding ring on Grant’s finger—the matching band to Isabella’s ring. He twisted it off the broken knuckle with a brutal, sharp pull that forced a gasp of agony from Grant’s throat.
Massimo did not keep the ring. He tossed the gold band onto the floor, where it rolled across the marble, clinking against the baseboard.
He turned to Isabella. "Isabella."
Isabella rose from her chair, walking slowly toward the center of the room. Her posture was straight, her head held high, radiating the untouchable authority of a Caradonna sovereign.
She looked down at the man who had tormented her for three years, the man who had made her cower in her own home, the man who had terrified her innocent child. She felt no rage; she felt only a profound, liberating emptiness.
With her right hand, Isabella reached to her own left ring finger. She slid her diamond wedding band off her skin.
She did not hand it to Grant. She did not throw it.
She walked over to where Grant sat, held the ring directly above his lap, and let it drop into his blood-stained hands.
"I gave you my youth, Grant," Isabella said, her voice steady, clear, and ringing with absolute finality. "I gave you a son. And you gave me scars. Today, your debt is paid. And you are nothing to me."
Grant stared down at the glittering diamond in his palm, tears spilling silently onto the stone, unable to utter a single word of defense.
Massimo stepped beside his daughter, resting a heavy, protective hand on her shoulder.
"Franco," Massimo commanded quietly.
"Yes, Don Massimo?"

"Take Grant and Evelyn to the container yards at the Brooklyn docks," Massimo ordered, his voice carrying the finality of an executioner's bell. "Put them on an unregistered cargo freighter bound for South America. No money. No passports. No names. They will work the engine rooms until they reach Valparaíso. If either of them ever steps foot on North American soil again, feed them to the harbor."
Evelyn shrieked, clawing at the floorboards as two enforcers hauled her to her feet, while Grant was dragged backward like a sack of grain, his designer loafers leaving long scuff marks on the polished marble until the double doors slammed shut behind them.
