Chapter 6

Massimo reached into his vest pocket, withdrew an antique silver cigar case, and opened the gold latch with a quiet snap. He selected a dark Maduro, clipped the tip with a small guillotine cutter, and struck a wooden match.

The small flame flared to life, casting dancing golden reflections across the hard angles of his face and the gold signet ring on his finger. He took a slow, methodical draw, exhaling a thick plume of gray smoke into the cold cellar air.

"Tell me about the meeting at the Plaza Hotel last Thursday, Grant," Massimo said softly through the haze.

Grant’s swollen eye twitched violently. "What meeting? I was at the squash club—"

"Do not insult my intelligence while you are tied to my chair, Grant," Massimo cut in, his baritone dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "Room 814. Two thirty in the afternoon. With Marcus Moretti."

The vault fell into a suffocating, breathless silence. Even Evelyn stopped sobbing, staring at her son with sudden, horrified dread.

"Marcus Moretti?" Evelyn gasped, her voice trembling. "Grant... you met with Chicago?"

"He met with Chicago," Massimo confirmed, taking another slow draw from his cigar. "Because Grant realized that even if he beat my daughter into submission, he would never control the Caradonna ports without outside muscle. He promised Chicago thirty percent of our Brooklyn terminals in exchange for an extraction team."

Massimo leaned forward, blowing smoke directly into Grant’s bleeding face.

"You were planning to take Noah, weren't you, Grant?" Massimo whispered, every word landing like an anvil. "You were going to take my grandson to Chicago. To use him as a hostage so I wouldn't burn your family to the ground."

Grant broke completely. Tears of sheer, animal panic mixed with the dried blood on his cheeks as he thrash violently against the iron restraints.

"They forced me, Massimo!" Grant wailed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "Marcus threatened my life! He said if I didn't deliver the port codes, they’d put a bullet in my head! I was trying to protect Noah! I swear to God on my father's grave, I was trying to protect my son!"

"You protect your son by burning his mother with cigars?" Massimo asked softly.

He stood up, towering over the bound man. With cold, mechanical precision, Massimo took the glowing cherry of his cigar and brought it within an inch of Grant’s collarbone.

Grant shrieked, pressing his spine hard against the iron chair, his eyes bulging in pure terror. "No! Massimo, please! Don't! I'm begging you!"

Massimo did not touch him with the ember. He held it there for three agonizing seconds, letting the heat radiate against Grant’s skin, watching the coward weep and shake.

Then, Massimo casually tapped the ash onto Grant’s silk lapel and extinguished the cigar in a silver tray on the table.

"A man who tortures the defenseless," Massimo murmured, looking down with absolute, pitiless disgust, "is always the first to scream when the fire turns toward him."

He turned to Franco.

"Bring Don Victor and the Commission elders to the main showroom upstairs," Massimo ordered. "It’s time to convene the council."
