Chapter 7

By eight o’clock in the evening, the grand showroom on the fifth floor had been cleared of broken glass and fallen ribbons, but the atmosphere remained tense as a cocked hammer.

Around the long mahogany presentation table sat eight men—the senior capos of the Caradonna organization, alongside two visiting elders from the Five Families Commission. At the head of the table sat Massimo Caradonna, immaculate in his dark three-piece suit, his hands resting flat against the polished wood.

To his right sat Isabella.

She had washed the tears from her face and changed into a fresh, high-collared navy silk gown that covered her neck, but her left arm remained bound in a clean white medical sling. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant twist, her rosy cheeks pale but her eyes clear, hardened, and resolute. Three-year-old Noah was asleep upstairs in the private suite under the watchful eye of four armed guards.

The heavy double doors opened, and two enforcers dragged Grant and Evelyn into the room.

Grant was barely able to stand, his face disfigured by swelling, his clothes ruined. Evelyn walked with a stiff, trembling posture, stripped of her pride, her pearls gone, her fair skin pasty with terror. They were forced onto two wooden chairs at the foot of the long table.

Massimo did not stand. He leaned forward, his voice cutting through the cavernous room like a razor blade.

"Elders of the Commission," Massimo began, his American accent smooth, authoritative, and calm. "Three years ago, this table sanctioned the marriage between Isabella Caradonna and Grant Hale. We were told it was an alliance of commerce, logistics, and blood."

He paused, letting the silence press down upon the room.

"Today, my three-year-old grandson showed me the price of that alliance," Massimo continued.

He looked at Isabella. "Show them, my daughter."

Isabella did not hesitate. With her right hand, she reached across her chest and pulled down the silk sleeve of her right arm, then unbuttoned the high collar of her navy gown, revealing the dark bruises, the deep contusions, and the cigarette burns marking her porcelain skin.

A sharp, collective intake of breath echoed around the table.

Elder Lucchese, a silver-haired patriarch of seventy-five, slammed his palm onto the mahogany. "Madness. Gross, dishonorable madness."

"There is more, Elder," Massimo said, gesturing to Franco.

Franco stepped forward and dropped a thick manila folder onto the center of the table. Inside lay the intercepted wire transfers, the audio recordings from Room 814 at the Plaza Hotel, and the signed contracts Grant had drafted with the Moretti syndicate in Chicago.

"Treason against the Five Families," Elder Lucchese read aloud, his eyes darkening as he scanned the documents. "Attempted conspiracy to introduce outside syndicates into the New York maritime channels. And systematic brutality against a sovereign boss’s bloodline."

Grant looked up, his voice cracking into a desperate whine. "Lucchese... listen to me! My father—"

May you like

"Your father would have shot you himself, Grant," Elder Lucchese interrupted, his voice dripping with disgust. "The Commission’s ruling is unanimous. Under Article Four of the Syndicate Charter, the Hale family is declared forfeit. Their names are erased from the roll. Their holdings are surrendered to the Caradonna bloodline as blood restitution."

Evelyn let out a choked, wailing sob, burying her face in her hands, while Grant slumped in his chair, his spirit entirely broken.
