Chapter 7

The live orchestra was in the middle of a sweeping crescendo when the conductor abruptly lowered his baton.

The music stopped.

The sudden silence was jarring, absolute, and deeply unnatural for a party of this magnitude. Without the symphony to mask it, every conversation in the grand ballroom rapidly died out. Hundreds of guests turned their heads, their confusion palpable under the bright, cinematic lights.

Through the sudden, breathless quiet of the room, the rapid, rhythmic tapping of small shoes echoed against the polished floor.

Maya was running across the ballroom. Her tulle party dress billowed around her knees, the small tiara glinting brightly as she wove through the frozen sea of elite guests. Tears were streaming down her fair, rosy cheeks once again, fueled by the overwhelming emotion of the night and the desperate need for a protector she had only ever seen in a hidden locket.

"Grandpa!" Maya cried out, her small voice shattering the silence of the ballroom.

Julian whipped his head around, his face draining of color. "What is she doing? Security! Grab that child!"

But the security guards lining the walls did not move. They stood perfectly still, their eyes locked not on Julian, but on the elderly man standing near the terrace doors.

Mr. Blackwood stood like a monolith. At sixty-eight, he commanded the room without speaking a single word. His tuxedo was flawless, his posture straight as a spear. As he saw the little girl running toward him, the terrifying, hardened mask of the syndicate Chairman melted away.

He dropped to one knee, uncaring of his expensive suit, and opened his arms wide.

Maya threw herself into Mr. Blackwood’s arms. The impact was entirely absorbed by the older man, who wrapped his large, powerful hands around her small frame, pulling her tightly against his chest. He buried his face in her light hair, his eyes closing tightly as he held his granddaughter for the very first time.

"I've got you, little bird," Mr. Blackwood whispered, his voice thick with a profound, earth-shattering emotion. "I've got you. Grandpa is here."

Eleanor followed a few steps behind her daughter. She walked slowly, her stride emotional but incredibly steady. The guests parted for her, turning in shock as they watched the supposedly meek wife of Julian Vance approach the most feared and powerful man on the eastern seaboard.

"Dad," Eleanor breathed as she reached them, tears finally brimming in her own eyes.

Mr. Blackwood looked up from Maya’s shoulder. He looked at his daughter, taking in her tailored pantsuit, her unbowed posture, and the absence of the red thread on her wrist.

"Welcome home, Eleanor," Mr. Blackwood said, his voice carrying clearly in the dead silence of the room.

A collective gasp rippled through the elite crowd. Julian Vance stood frozen in the center of the floor, his entire world beginning to spin out of control.
