Chapter 5

The grand ballroom of the Vance estate was a breathtaking spectacle. The natural, cinematic lighting poured through the massive glass walls, reflecting brilliantly off the polished floors and crystal centerpieces. There was no yellow tint, only a crisp, pristine white light that illuminated the city’s most elite guests. Waiters navigated the crowded room carrying trays of champagne, while a live orchestra played a sophisticated, sweeping symphony from a raised stage.

Julian and Genevieve stood near the center of the room, completely in their element. They were surrounded by a circle of wealthy investors and socialites, looking confident and proud. Genevieve’s fitted couture gown drew admiring glances, and Julian wore his formal suit like a suit of armor, projecting the image of a flawless, untouchable titan of industry.

"It really is a magnificent turnout, Julian," a wealthy senator remarked, raising his glass. "You’ve outdone yourself."

"Thank you, Senator," Julian smiled smoothly, his fair skin flushing with pride. "We pride ourselves on maintaining a certain standard of excellence."

The heavy mahogany doors at the entrance of the ballroom suddenly swung open.

The movement caught the attention of the guests near the back, causing a ripple of whispers to spread through the crowd. Julian turned his head, his confident smile freezing on his face.

Eleanor entered the ballroom.

She did not look like the quiet, submissive wife who had slinked around the edges of Julian’s parties for the past five years. She walked with a powerful, commanding stride, her tailored pantsuit cutting a sharp, authoritative silhouette against the bright lights of the room. She held Maya’s hand tightly. The little girl, still wearing her tulle party dress and small tiara, walked bravely beside her mother, her rosy cheek still bearing the faint red mark of Genevieve’s hand.

Julian’s face darkened with fury. He quickly excused himself from the senator and marched aggressively across the ballroom floor, intercepting Eleanor before she could reach the center of the room.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Julian hissed, keeping his volume low to avoid a scene, though his tone was laced with venom. He blocked her path, glaring down at her. "I told you that you were uninvited. You are embarrassing me in front of my investors."

Eleanor stopped. She didn't shrink back. She looked up at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated boredom.

"Move out of my way, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice cool and even.

"You have lost your mind," Julian sneered, leaning in close. "You think putting on a brave face changes anything? You are a guest in my world, Eleanor. And you have overstayed your welcome."

May you like

Maya tightened her grip on Eleanor’s hand, shrinking back slightly from Julian’s towering, angry frame. Eleanor squeezed the girl’s hand reassuringly, refusing to break eye contact with the man who thought he owned her.

"Your world is about to get very, very small," Eleanor promised.
