Chapter 1

The grand foyer of the Vance estate was bathed in a brilliant, cinematic light. There were no warm, yellow hues to soften the edges of the room; instead, the natural daylight pouring through the towering skylights was crisp, pure, and unforgivingly bright. It illuminated the pristine white marble floors, the sweeping crystal chandeliers, and the fair, rosy complexions of the people standing near the center of the hall.
Five-year-old Maya stood frozen, her small hands trembling at her sides. She wore a delicate tulle party dress, meant to make her look like a princess, complete with a small, glittering tiara resting in her soft, light hair. But there was no joy in her wide, terrified eyes.
Genevieve towered over her. At twenty-nine, Genevieve was a vision of modern, aggressive elegance. She wore a fitted couture evening gown that hugged her slender frame, her fair skin flushed with a sudden, vicious anger.
Without a shred of hesitation, Genevieve raised her hand and slapped Maya hard across the face.
The sharp, cracking sound echoed off the high marble walls, drowning out the faint classical music playing in the adjacent rooms. The sheer force of the blow sent Maya collapsing to the cold marble floor. Her small tiara went skittering across the polished stone as she curled into a tight ball, sobbing instantly, the sound raw and breathless.
Eleanor Blackwood, thirty-two years old and dressed in a sharply tailored pantsuit, had been descending the grand staircase. She witnessed the strike in real-time. Her breath caught in her throat, her fair face draining of color before flushing with absolute panic. Her heels clicked frantically against the marble steps as she rushed down, throwing herself to her knees beside her weeping daughter.
"Maya! Oh, my sweet girl, I’ve got you," Eleanor cried out, her voice cracking as she carefully lifted the sobbing child from the cold stone. She pressed Maya’s face into her shoulder, her hands shaking as she stroked the girl's hair.
Julian Vance, thirty-five years old and wearing a perfectly pressed formal suit, stood only a few feet away. His hands were tucked casually into his pockets. He watched the entire scene unfold with a blank, expressionless face, not offering a single movement to help his supposed daughter or his wife.
Genevieve looked down at the sobbing child with a sneer of pure, selfish disgust. She casually brushed a hand over the fabric of her couture gown, her rosy cheeks turning a darker shade of indignant pink.
“Look what your daughter did to my dress,” Genevieve said, her tone dripping with annoyed, entitled venom. “She stepped right on the silk hem. Do you have any idea how much this costs, Eleanor?”

“She is five years old!” Eleanor shouted, her voice echoing in the bright foyer. “You hit a five-year-old child over a piece of fabric!”
“She lacks discipline,” Julian finally spoke, his American accent smooth and chillingly apathetic. “Genevieve is right, Eleanor. You coddle the girl too much. An apology is owed, and it certainly isn't coming from Genevieve.”
