Chapter 6

Julian let out a short, derisive bark of a laugh, his fair face twisting into an ugly mask of superiority. He looked Eleanor up and down, taking in her tailored pantsuit, and then glanced down at Maya, his eyes entirely devoid of any paternal warmth.

"You really are delusional, aren't you?" Julian said, his American accent dripping with condescension. He stepped closer, attempting to use his physical size to intimidate her. "You come down here, dragging this brat into a room full of the most powerful people in the state, thinking you can make some kind of grand stand? You're nothing, Eleanor."

"Julian," a voice called out softly from behind him. Genevieve had glided over, stepping to Julian’s side. She looked at Eleanor with absolute disdain, her couture gown shimmering in the bright, cinematic light. "Is she causing a scene? I can have security escort her out through the kitchen."

"I was just explaining the reality of her situation," Julian said, wrapping an arm around Genevieve’s waist, a deliberate, cruel display meant to break Eleanor.

Eleanor didn't even flinch. She watched them with the cold, detached fascination of a scientist observing insects.

"Look around you, Eleanor," Julian continued, gesturing to the ballroom filled with laughing elites and clinking glasses. "This is power. This is wealth. You think snapping a cheap bracelet and making a fake phone call changes the fact that you have nowhere to go?"

"I know exactly where I am going," Eleanor replied evenly.

Julian sneered, his arrogance blinding him to the subtle shift in the room's atmosphere. He leaned forward, delivering his final, crushing blow.

"Without this family," Julian said, his voice smug and dismissive, "you're nothing but street trash."

Eleanor’s expression remained entirely composed. "I survived your family, Julian. I sincerely doubt you will survive mine."

Before Julian could respond to the bizarre threat, Maya suddenly let go of Eleanor’s hand.

The little girl had been looking past Julian, her wide blue eyes scanning the massive ballroom. Through the sea of formal suits and evening gowns, near the far end of the hall where the most elite VIPs were gathered, a man had just entered through the private terrace doors.

He was sixty-eight years old, wearing an immaculate, razor-sharp tuxedo. His fair, rosy skin was weathered with decades of ruthless authority, his silver hair perfectly styled. He radiated a terrifying, magnetic power that made the crowds instinctively part for him.

Maya didn't know his name. She didn't know his empire. But she knew the face from the single, hidden photograph Eleanor had kept tucked away in a locket for five years.

Maya suddenly pulled free from Eleanor's grasp.

"Maya, wait!" Eleanor called out, but the panic in her voice was entirely feigned. She watched her daughter run, a proud, fierce smile finally breaking across her face.
