Chapter 9

"My family will not stand for this!" Blair shrieked, kicking her heels against the polished marble floor as the guards hauled her toward the service doors. "You need our political connections, Gideon! You cannot survive without my father's alliance! He will bring the entire state police force to your gates!"

"Do you expect me to fear a corrupt politician more than I despise a monster standing in my dining room?" Gideon asked coldly, watching her struggle with a dark, unyielding stare. "Take her down to the basement holding cells. Ensure the temperature is dropped, and that she is stripped of all jewelry and communication devices."

"No! You can't keep me down there! I’ll tell the commission! I’ll destroy you!" Blair wailed.

"Are you under the illusion that you will ever speak to another living soul outside of those concrete walls?" Gideon asked softly, though the chilling promise carried clearly across the room.

The heavy service doors slammed shut behind the enforcers, cutting off Blair’s frantic, echoing screams with a definitive thud. The opulent dining hall was instantly plunged back into a profound, ringing silence. The fifty guests had vanished, the fiancée was caged, and Gideon was left standing alone amidst the wreckage of a broken political alliance.

He stood perfectly still for a long moment, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly ebbing from his system, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion. He had defended his unborn child and rescued the woman he secretly cherished, but the political fallout with the Sinclair family would inevitably ignite a massive war in the coming days.

He turned and walked out of the dining hall, navigating the sprawling, brightly lit corridors of his mansion. He bypassed his study and the armory, heading directly for the secure, private wing of the estate. The heavy oak door to his master suite stood at the end of the hall, flanked by two of his most trusted, heavily armed men.

"Is it secure?" Gideon asked, his deep voice carrying a quiet urgency.

"Yes, Boss. No one has entered or exited," the lead guard confirmed, stepping aside to open the heavy door for him.

Gideon stepped into his private quarters. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a roaring fireplace. Esme was sitting on the edge of the massive four-poster bed, holding a sleeping Maisie in her arms. The little girl had finally succumbed to the exhaustion of the terrifying evening, her head resting peacefully against her mother's chest.

Esme looked up as Gideon entered, her expressive eyes wide with a mixture of fear and profound relief. She still wore her black maid dress and white apron, looking incredibly delicate against the opulent backdrop of his bedroom.

Gideon walked slowly toward them, dropping to one knee on the thick Persian rug beside the bed. The terrifying aura of the mafia boss vanished entirely, replaced by the profound, unprotected vulnerability of a man looking at the family he had almost lost.

"Are you unharmed, Esme?" Gideon asked, his voice softening into a register he reserved only for her.
