Chapter 1

The luxurious dining hall of the Crowne estate was suffocating beneath its own opulence. Tiered crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the high, painted ceilings, casting a brilliant, warm golden light across the grand space. The natural, cinematic illumination danced elegantly over carved walnut furniture, gilded wall panels, and towering cream marble columns, devoid of any heavy yellow cast. The scent of roasted meats and expensive pine filled the air, mingling with the designer perfumes of the elite guests. Ivory candles glowed fiercely inside ornate brass candelabras, nestled perfectly among thick evergreen garlands and bright red berries. In the corner of the vast room, a towering Christmas tree sparkled with warm fairy lights, heavy gold ornaments, and rich burgundy ribbons that cascaded down its branches.
At the center of this breathtaking display sat Gideon Crowne. Thirty-two years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp jawline dusted with very short, neat stubble. His dark hair was naturally swept back, framing a face that commanded absolute authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch glinted under the lights. Artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The champagne is exceptional tonight, Gideon," an older capo remarked from down the banquet table, raising his crystal glass.
"It is imported directly from our vineyards in France," Gideon replied slowly, his deep, controlled voice cutting effortlessly through the ambient noise of the room.
Beside him sat his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée, Blair Sinclair. She was a vision of high-society perfection in an elegant, luxurious emerald evening gown that clung to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the chandeliers. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was polished and reassuring, radiating a warmth that masked a cold, calculating ambition underneath.
"You have outdone yourself with the decorations, Blair," a senator's wife commented with a polite smile.
"Thank you, Margaret. I wanted this Christmas Eve to be entirely unforgettable," Blair answered smoothly, her smile never wavering.
But moving through the periphery of the room was Esme Hart, and for her, the night was a living nightmare. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty. Her delicate features and highly expressive eyes were framed by fair skin and a graceful posture. She wore an elegant fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist and a short A-line skirt. The pristine white of her apron, collar, and cuffs contrasted sharply with the dark fabric, matching the white ruffled maid headband that sat perfectly in her hair.
Esme’s hands trembled as she stood near the serving station, holding a small, silver cup.
"Mommy, why are you shaking?" a small voice whispered.
Esme looked down at her six-year-old daughter, Maisie, who was dressed in a beautiful burgundy Christmas dress and a cream cardigan.
"I'm fine, sweetie," Esme whispered back, her voice cracking. "Just stay right here. Don't move."

"Why do you have to drink that?" Maisie asked, her innocent eyes staring at the small cup.
"It's just a special Christmas toast," Esme lied, fighting back tears as she prepared to walk toward the head table, carrying the very poison meant to end the life growing inside her.
