Chapter 6

The physical act of Gideon taking the poisoned cup and placing it before Blair was a terrifying, silent indictment. The opulent dining hall was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their brass candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Blair’s elegant features. Her confident, controlled certainty began to fracture, replaced by a creeping, icy dread as she looked at the small cup sitting on the gold-rimmed porcelain plate.
"Gideon, what are you doing?" Blair asked, her voice trembling for the first time that evening. "You cannot possibly take her side over mine. My family brings the entire eastern port to this alliance. You need me."
"I need nothing from a woman who threatens children," Gideon replied, his voice a low, vibrating hum of impending violence.
"I never threatened her!" Blair shrieked, losing her composure entirely as she pointed a shaking finger at Esme and the little girl hiding behind the black maid dress. "I told her to take a vitamin supplement! They are lying to frame me!"
Before Blair could spin another hysterical defense, a small, quiet voice broke through the tension, delivering a blow that no amount of political maneuvering could deflect.
Six-year-old Maisie stepped out from behind her mother’s skirt. She wore her burgundy Christmas dress and cream cardigan with a brave dignity that belied her young age. She did not look at the terrifying mafia boss, nor did she look at the heavily armed guards standing by the doors. She looked directly at Blair.
Maisie’s young face was devoid of malice, but filled with a terrifying, innocent clarity. She had not understood the complexities of mafia politics, but she understood exactly what she had heard in the hallway earlier that afternoon.
"You said you'd kill me otherwise," Maisie stated, her voice remaining incredibly small and steady, cutting through the ambient silence of the room.
The devastating impact of the child's truth struck the room like a physical shockwave. The silence was instantly replaced by the deafening sound of absolute ruin for Blair Sinclair.
"You little liar!" Blair screamed, lunging forward with her hand raised, her diamond earrings swinging wildly.
Gideon moved with preternatural speed. The sheer, masculine power radiating from his broad shoulders was terrifying as he intercepted her path. He didn't strike her, but he caught her wrist in a vice-like grip, his artistic tattoos stark against her pale, aristocratic skin.

"If you take one more step toward this child, Blair, it will be the last step you ever take," Gideon promised, his deep, controlled voice dropping into a register that shook the very foundation of the room.
Gideon briefly looked down toward Maisie, a profound, agonizing pain passing through his dark eyes as he realized the sheer terror this innocent child had been subjected to under his own roof. He slowly turned his head back toward Blair. His jaw tightened slightly; he held a cold, unwavering stare, locking the manipulative woman in a silent, terrifying promise of absolute retribution. The room held its breath, suspended in silence.
