Chapter 5

The revelation that the fiancée of the Crowne syndicate had orchestrated a forced abortion and threatened a child sent a shockwave of absolute terror through the dining room. The guests, hardened criminals and high-society aristocrats alike, held their breath. No one dared to move a muscle under the crushing weight of the silence.
Blair Sinclair moved quickly, desperate to regain control of the narrative before Gideon unleashed his legendary wrath. She smoothed the luxurious fabric of her emerald evening gown and lifted her chin, attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic authority.
She looked directly at Gideon, holding his gaze with a cold, controlled certainty that chilled the blood of everyone watching.
"Gideon, you must listen to reason," Blair stated, her American accent dripping with a manufactured, icy pragmatism. "Even if this absurd story were true, which it isn't, you cannot possibly entertain the idea of acknowledging a bastard born to a servant. It would destroy your political alliances. It would make you a laughingstock among the five families."
"Are you attempting to dictate the politics of my bloodline, Blair?" Gideon asked, his deep, measured voice dropping into a lethal register.
"I am protecting your legacy!" Blair argued, stepping closer to him, desperate to re-establish their partnership. "A maid can't carry your heir, Gideon. It is an insult to everything we are building together. If she is pregnant, the problem needs to be handled discretely for the good of the syndicate."
The sheer, audacious cruelty of her logic hung heavily in the bright, luminous air. She hadn't denied the threat; she had merely attempted to justify the murder of his child as a necessary business measure.
Gideon’s jaw clenched so tightly the bone looked as though it might snap. The cold, unyielding armor of the mafia boss slammed firmly into place. He rose slowly to his full, towering height, his tailored dark three-piece suit casting a formidable shadow over the exquisite banquet table. He stepped around his chair, positioning his broad, masculine body deliberately between Esme and Blair.
It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of protection that stripped away Blair's authority in a single movement.
Without breaking eye contact with his fiancée, Gideon reached out his hand toward Esme. The negative space tattoos on his fingers contrasted beautifully with her pale, trembling skin. Moving with incredible, reverent gentleness, Gideon carefully uncurled Esme’s fingers from the small, ornate cup.

"Give it to me, Esme," Gideon commanded softly.
He gently took the cup from Esme’s hand, ensuring none of the poisoned liquid spilled onto her white apron. He turned slowly and placed the cup deliberately onto the carved walnut table, right in front of Blair's empty dinner plate. The clink of the porcelain against the wood echoed like a judge's gavel in the silent room.
