Chapter 3

The absolute stillness of Gideon Crowne sent an immediate, chilling ripple through the grand banquet hall. The clinking of crystal glasses and the soft scraping of silver against gold-rimmed porcelain ceased entirely within his immediate radius, the silence spreading outward like a wave until it consumed the entire room. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped eating and speaking, turning their heads toward the head of the table. The warm golden light cascading from the chandeliers seemed to freeze in the air, highlighting the sudden, suffocating tension that had gripped the syndicate.

Gideon did not look at the elite guests, nor did he look at his fiancée sitting beside him. He slowly turned his head, his dark, sweeping gaze locking directly onto Esme. The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a profound, urgent questioning.

The artistic negative space tattoos on his fingers flexed as he gripped the edge of the carved walnut table. He looked at the trembling maid, taking in her pale, rosy skin, the sheer terror in her expressive eyes, and the small child clinging desperately to her wrist. The words the little girl had spoken echoed in his mind, rearranging the entire landscape of his reality in a matter of seconds.

"Did you hear what the child just said, Gideon?" an older relative asked nervously from a few seats down.

Gideon ignored the man completely. His intense, dark eyes remained fixed on Esme's face, stripping away the layers of her fear to find the truth hidden underneath.

"Esme," Gideon commanded, his deep, controlled voice slicing through the heavy silence of the room like a physical blade. "Is the baby mine?"

The question hung in the bright, luminous air, demanding an answer that would dictate the survival of everyone seated near the head table. The entire syndicate was staring at the housemaid. The guests exchanged terrified, silent glances. Capos shifted uncomfortably in their velvet dining chairs. No one dared to breathe too loudly, let alone speak. The sheer, masculine power radiating from Gideon's broad shoulders promised absolute destruction if he was lied to.

"Gideon, darling, this is absurd," Blair interjected quickly, attempting to assert her authority. Her polished smile strained at the edges. "The maid is clearly trying to cause a scandal to extort the family. You shouldn't indulge this kind of peasant theatrics."

"I did not ask you, Blair," Gideon stated slowly, the dangerous, vibrating cadence of his voice leaving no room for hesitation. He did not even turn his head to look at his fiancée. His unwavering focus remained entirely on the woman holding the small cup.

"Answer me, Esme," Gideon said softly, though the command carried clearly across the silent room. "Tell me the truth."

Esme stood paralyzed, her delicate features pale with shock. She felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the ones burning into hers. She knew that answering this question would either save her child or seal her death warrant.
