Chapter 9

The heavy crash of Richard’s body hitting the floor was followed by a moment of absolute, suffocating silence.

The automatic pistol clattered away across the tiles, coming to rest against Carla’s shoe. Carla stared at it in horror, then kicked it under the bassinet, keeping her arms wrapped tightly around newborn Noah. Beside her, Denise sat slumped against the wall, weeping silently into her hands, her jewelry tangled, her aristocratic poise completely destroyed.

Mark lay curled on his side near the window, his chest heaving with ragged sobs, unable to lift his face from the linoleum.

Emma stood swaying in the center of the room, leaning heavily on the IV pole. The physical toll of the strike had pushed her body past its absolute limits; her vision swam with dark, pulsing edges, and her hospital gown was stained with a growing crimson patch at the waistline where her stitches had torn.

Yet she refused to fall.

"Carla," Emma whispered, her voice hoarse, trembling with exhaustion.

Carla looked up, her tear-stained face pale and humbled. "Emma... I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry."

"Bring me my son," Emma said.

Carla rose slowly to her feet, moving with extreme care, holding Noah securely against her chest. She walked across the debris of scattered legal documents, stepped over her unconscious father, and approached the bed.

With trembling, gentle hands, Carla laid Noah into the crook of Emma’s left arm.

The moment the baby’s warm body touched Emma’s chest, the tension that had held her upright began to fracture. She lowered herself slowly back onto the edge of the mattress, pulling Noah close against her neck, inhaling the sweet, powdery scent of his skin. Noah stopped crying almost immediately, his tiny hands curling into the cotton of her gown, his breathing settling into soft, rhythmic snuffles.

"Lily too," Emma murmured, her voice barely audible.

Carla turned back to the bassinet, lifted the swaddled baby girl, and carried her across the room. She nestled Lily into the pillows beside Emma’s right side.

For the first time since the ordeal had begun, both children were safe in their mother’s orbit.

"Thank you, Carla," Emma breathed, tears finally spilling freely down her bruised, fair cheeks.

Carla stepped back, lowering her head, shame burning through her posture. "I didn't stop them sooner, Emma. I should have stopped them at the elevator."

"You stopped them when it mattered," Emma said.

From the nightstand, Judge Vance’s voice sounded once more through the smartphone.

"Mrs. Walker," the judge spoke, his tone filled with profound gravity. "Medical staff and federal tactical units are directly outside your door. The mechanical override is completing its authorization cycle now."

On the floor, Mark lifted his head, his swollen eyes fixed on Emma with pathetic, desperate pleading.

"Emma..." Mark croaked. "Please... tell them I didn't know about the hydraulics. Tell them my dad made me do it."

Emma looked down at him from the bed, her face an unreadable mask of cold, sovereign justice.

"Tell it to the grand jury, Mark," Emma said. "You made your choice the second you pulled my son off my chest."

A high-pitched electronic tone trilled through the room.

The heavy steel door swung inward.
