Chapter 3

The mechanical voice through the overhead speaker hung in the sterile air like an unexploded shell. Carla gasped, pressing a manicured hand over her mouth, while Mark instinctively retreated into the shadow of the heavy privacy drapes, shielding Noah with his own body.
"Who is that?" Richard barked at the speaker, his voice trembling between outrage and mounting terror. "Identify yourself! This is a private family matter!"
"This is an armed felony in progress," the speaker replied calmly. "Mr. Bell, you have three minutes before the floor pressure seals engage."
"They're bluffing," Denise hissed, stepping away from the locked door and crowding Richard’s elbow. "It's an automated hospital drill. Emma triggered an administrative alert with that bedside button! They don't have jurisdiction to enter a private patient suite without a medical director!"
"Does that sound like an orderly to you, Denise?" Emma said, cold amusement curving her lips. "Does an orderly track your movements through an encrypted audio tap?"
"You set us up," Mark stammered, his eyes darting toward the window overlooking the rain-slicked courtyard four stories below. "Dad, she knew we were coming. Look at her. She isn't crying anymore. She isn't begging!"
"I don't beg thieves," Emma said.
She winced slightly as she shifted her weight, the agony in her abdomen pulsing with hot needle-pricks, but her gaze remained locked onto Mark.
"Bring Noah back to this bed, Mark," she commanded. "Every second you hold him adds five years to your federal indictment."
"Shut up!" Mark shouted, his composure shattering. "You think you're untouchable because of Ethan? Ethan was a paranoid freak! He had cameras in our dining room, transponders in our company cars, trackers on our phones! He treated us like criminals!"
"Because you were criminals," Emma countered without raising her voice. "He caught you embezzling from the pension accounts six months ago. He gave you a choice: resign quietly from the board, or let the Department of Justice unseal the warrants. Then his plane suddenly suffers dual hydraulic failure over the ocean?"
Richard’s face tightened into an ugly, dark mask. "Accidents happen in bad weather, Emma. Highly complex avionics fail."
"Not when the maintenance logs are wiped twenty minutes before takeoff from your private hangar, Richard," Emma stated, her words hitting him like solid lead.
Carla let out a sharp cry. "Dad... what is she talking about? You told me Ethan’s mechanics cleared that flight!"
"Be quiet, Carla!" Denise snapped, glaring daggers at her daughter. "Don't listen to her lies! She’s trying to divide us!"
"Is she lying, Dad?" Carla stepped toward her father, her heels clicking rapidly. "You promised me this was just about signing the family trust! You promised me we were just securing the children’s legal guardianship so the state wouldn't freeze the assets!"
"That's exactly what this is," Richard lied smoothly, though a bead of sweat tracked down his temple. He turned violently back to the tray table, flipping the folder open to expose two crisp, legal documents. "Pick up the pen, Emma. You designate Mark and myself as primary conservators for both children and sole executors of the Walker estate. Do it now."
"And if I refuse?" Emma asked.
Richard reached across the bed rail, his knuckles brushing against Emma’s bruised cheek with sickening familiarity.
"If you refuse," Richard whispered, "Mark walks through the service corridor with Noah. A private transport is waiting in the basement. By sunrise, your son will be in a jurisdiction where American court orders are nothing more than toilet paper. And you will raise your daughter in an empty house, wondering what his voice sounds like."
Emma did not flinch from his touch. She leaned closer to his fingers, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You really believe you're leaving this hospital, Richard?"

The concealed button under the mattress pulsed once more—a heavy, rhythmic double-beat.
Instantly, the fluorescent tubes overhead went pitch-black.
