Chapter 6

Richard’s eyes darted between his son and the documents, a flash of pure, cornered malice flickering across his features.
"Don't listen to her, Mark!" Richard barked, stepping between Mark and the tray table. "She’s poisoning your mind! We discussed this at the hotel! The family trust holds the assets collectively! We couldn't put three executors on the probate filing without triggering a secondary state audit!"
"You told me I was the co-trustee," Mark whispered, his fingers tightening around the swaddle until Noah let out another sharp cry. "You told me the northern holdings in Maine were transferring directly to my LLC!"
"And you believed him?" Emma cut in, her voice slicing through the argument like a scalpel. "Mark, your father has been bankrupt since November. The Macau casino consortium holds three liens on his estate. He didn't come here to save the Bell family. He came here to pay off loan sharks before they put a bullet in his skull."
"Shut your lying mouth!" Denise lunged toward the bed, her fingers clawed, aiming straight for Emma’s throat.
Before Denise could clear the rail, Carla surged up from the floor. With a desperate, sobbing scream, Carla grabbed her mother’s waist and dragged her backward into the plastic armchairs.
"Stop it, Mom! Stop it!" Carla wailed, pinning Denise’s arms to her sides while both women tumbled into the furniture. "Look at us! Look at what he’s doing to all of us! He lied to me, he lied to Mark, and he probably killed Ethan!"
"Get off me, you useless cow!" Denise shrieked, clawing at Carla’s face, leaving red welts across her daughter’s fair cheeks. "Let me go!"
While the two women struggled on the floor, Richard reached inside his suit coat.
When his hand emerged, the dim infrared light caught the dull, matte-black finish of a compact automatic pistol.
"Nobody moves," Richard commanded.
The room went dead. Carla froze over her mother, her breath catching in her throat. Denise stopped thrashing, staring up at her husband with wide, horrified eyes.
Mark backed against the wall, clutching the baby, staring at the gun in his father’s hand. "Dad... where did you get that? You said you were clean! You said security swept us at the front desk!"
"Security was paid off, you idiot," Richard hissed, leveling the barrel squarely at Emma’s chest. "You think I came here to play lawyer games with this bitch? I knew Vanguard was tracking the estate. I knew Ethan had contingencies. That's why this ends right now."
Emma looked down the barrel of the weapon. Her pulse remained completely level, her chin raised, her fair skin glowing pale and unyielding in the red light.
"Shoot me, Richard," Emma said softly. "Pull the trigger. Let’s see what happens to the lock when my heart rate monitor flatlines."
Richard’s finger tightened on the trigger, his knuckles whitening. "You think I care about the lock? If you die, Ethan’s will automatically enters non-probate succession under the survivorship clause. As the surviving paternal guardian of his minors, I take legal custody of both children by default."
"You aren't Ethan's father, Richard," Emma replied, her voice dropping into a register of devastating calm. "You married his mother when he was twelve. You never legally adopted him. Ethan made sure of that when he turned eighteen."
Richard’s face twitched. "The court won't know the difference once the state files are processed!"
"The court already knows," a voice spoke from the bedside table.
It was not the overhead speaker.
Emma’s personal phone, resting beneath the water pitcher on the nightstand, lit up with a brilliant blue display. A live video conference was active, its timer reading 00:14:22.

On the screen, a split feed showed the stern, immaculately dressed face of Judge Thomas Vance of the Southern District Court, flanked by two armed federal marshals.
"Mr. Bell," Judge Vance spoke through the speakerphone, his tone dry as dust. "This line has been recording audio and visual telemetry since you crossed the threshold of Room 412. Put that weapon down before the breaching team removes your head."
