Chapter 8

Ryan denied wanting my place.

For exactly thirty seconds.

Then he made the mistake of explaining himself.

“You’re fifty-eight.”

I smiled faintly.

“And?”

“You’ve been running everything for twenty-seven years.”

“And?”

“The organization needs younger leadership.”

“Meaning you.”

“I’m family.”

Emily laughed.

“By marriage.”

His face hardened.

“I carry the Carter name.”

“You took it.”

Silence.

That mattered.

Ryan had adopted the Carter name after marrying Emily.

He once called it respect.

Now it sounded like preparation.

Linda looked at her son.

“You don’t need to justify ambition.”

I turned.

She smiled.

“Men are allowed to want more.”

Emily stared.

“But women aren’t?”

“You have children.”

“So does Ryan.”

Linda’s face changed.

She had not expected that answer.

Emily continued.

“He has Emma and Noah.”

“He provides.”

“No.”

Emily’s voice steadied.

“He terrorizes.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Watch yourself.”

Emma automatically raised one arm toward her head.

Everyone saw.

Ryan saw too.

He froze.

I looked at him.

“Why did she do that?”

“She’s dramatic.”

Emma began crying.

Ryan sighed.

“There.”

I wanted to hit him.

I didn’t.

Not because he deserved restraint.

Because Emma deserved to see one man in the room who did not confuse power with uncontrolled rage.

I crouched.

“Did Daddy ever hit you?”

Emily stopped breathing.

Emma looked at Ryan.

He smiled softly.

Too softly.

“Think carefully.”

I stood immediately.

“No.”

His eyes met mine.

I turned back to Emma.

“You do not need to protect him.”

She whispered:

“He squeezes.”

“Where?”

“My arm.”

Emily covered her mouth.

Ryan snapped:

“When she runs near stairs.”

Emma shook her head.

“When I ask about Noah.”

The room went silent.

Same trigger.

Questions.

Ryan and Linda punished curiosity because curiosity uncovered patterns.

Emma continued:

“He said if I made Mommy upset, the baby could go away.”

Emily began crying.

Ryan rolled his eyes.

“She misunderstood.”

“No.”

Emma clutched the teddy.

“He said babies disappear when big sisters don’t listen.”

My hands went cold.

That was not discipline.

May you like

That was psychological control.

And Emma had been carrying it alone because every threat was built around losing someone she loved.
