Chapter 14

The blue diaper bag was recovered from Emily’s house before Vale’s team reached it.

Inside were no diapers.

No bottles.

Three encrypted route cards.

Two warehouse keys.

A Carter communications token.

Ryan had been using Noah’s belongings as a hiding place.

Emily stared at him.

“You put these in our baby’s bag.”

Ryan whispered:

“Temporary.”

She laughed.

The word had become obscene.

“Everything with you is temporary.”

He said nothing.

I examined the keys.

One opened East Warehouse.

The other belonged to a private Carter meeting house.

“How long?”

“Months.”

“Since before Noah was born?”

Ryan looked away.

There.

Yes.

Emily closed her eyes.

The pregnancy had not created his ambition.

It had only given him better cover.

Linda looked almost impressed.

“You never told me.”

Ryan stared at her.

“I learned from you.”

That silenced her.

For once.

I looked at him.

“Why the baby bag?”

“Everyone searches men.”

He glanced at Emily.

“No one searches mothers.”

My daughter looked disgusted.

He had used her body.

Her motherhood.

Her children.

Everything as camouflage.

Emma whispered:

“Daddy said babies make good hiding places.”

Ryan snapped:

“I never said that.”

Emma began crying.

He rolled his eyes.

“There.”

I stepped toward him.

“Do not.”

He stopped.

Emily looked at Emma.

“Did Daddy ever make you carry things?”

Emma nodded.

“My backpack.”

“What things?”

“Phones.”

Linda closed her eyes.

Another secret.

Ryan’s face tightened.

I stared.

“You used your four-year-old daughter as a courier.”

“She carried a backpack.”

“With hidden phones.”

“She didn’t know.”

“That is not a defense.”

He shouted:

“She was safe!”

Emma covered her head again.

The entire room froze.

Ryan saw.

This time he looked sick.

Not because I hit him.

I didn’t.

Because his own daughter’s body had answered before he could explain himself.

Emily knelt beside Emma.

“No one is going to hit you.”

Emma looked at Ryan.

Then whispered:

“Daddy says sorry after.”

That sentence hit harder than any punch.

Emily’s face changed.

She had heard the same apologies.

Different bruises.

May you like

Same cycle.

And Ryan finally had nowhere left to hide behind the word family.
