Chapter 3

Emily started remembering things aloud.
That was how control began to break.
Not with one confession.
With patterns finally becoming visible.
“The first time Noah became extremely sleepy, Ryan told me I was overreacting.”
Ryan stood beside the damaged cabinet.
“You were.”
Emily ignored him.
“The second time, Linda told me not to call Dr. Sterling.”
Linda sighed.
“Because you panic.”
“The third time, my phone disappeared.”
I looked at Ryan.
He shrugged.
“She loses things.”
Emily stared.
“You had it.”
He smiled.
“You asked me to charge it.”
“No.”
Ryan’s smile hardened.
“There. This is what I deal with.”
He looked at me.
“She remembers everything differently when she’s upset.”
I knew the tactic.
Make the victim defend memory instead of describing harm.
I looked at Emily.
“Continue.”
Her eyes filled.
“Whenever Noah was sick, Ryan told me not to bother you.”
“Why?”
“He said you were tired of my problems.”
My jaw tightened.
Ryan immediately said:
“I was protecting you from unnecessary stress.”
“By using my name.”
“You’re nearly sixty.”
I almost laughed.
“So?”
“You shouldn’t be dragged into every fever.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“You didn’t want me seeing Noah.”
Ryan said nothing.
Emma hugged her teddy.
“Daddy said Grandpa gets mad when babies are weak.”
The room stopped.
I looked down.
“Did he?”
Emma nodded.
Ryan snapped:
“That is not what I said.”
“What did you say?”
Silence.
Emma answered:
“He said if Mommy keeps calling Grandpa, Grandpa will take us away.”
Emily turned toward Ryan.
“You told her that?”
He rolled his eyes.
“She was refusing bedtime.”
Linda added:
“Fear helps children listen.”
James stared at her.
“She’s four.”
“And?”
The same word.
No empathy.
Only hierarchy.
Emma pulled the teddy against her face.
I crouched.
“Did Grandma ever hit you before today?”
Linda laughed.
“Here comes the interrogation.”
Emma wouldn’t answer.
That was an answer.
I waited.
Finally:
“Sometimes.”
Emily covered her mouth.
“When?”
Emma whispered:
“When I ask why Noah sleeps so much.”
Linda looked away.
Not shame.
Calculation.
I stood.
“You weren’t only hiding what you gave Noah.”
Pause.
“You were training Emma not to talk about it.”
May you like
Ryan’s face tightened.
And for the first time, Emily looked at her husband as though she had stopped seeing a husband at all.
