Chapter 15

I gathered the senior Carter capos that evening.
Private room.
No outsiders.
James stayed with Noah.
Emily chose to attend.
Emma did not.
Good.
Children do not need front-row seats to consequences.
Ryan stood without his family ring.
Linda beside him.
Anthony across the room.
I played the nursery recording.
Linda giving Noah the unprescribed medicine.
Ryan discussing Emily’s missed meetings.
Then Emma’s account.
The hidden phones.
The blue diaper bag.
Vale messages.
No one interrupted.
When it ended, one old capo looked at Ryan.
“You used your own son.”
Ryan said:
“I protected my family.”
The capo’s face hardened.
“From what?”
Ryan had no answer.
Linda stepped in.
“Vincent was refusing to prepare for succession.”
I looked at her.
“You starved authority from my daughter by making her child ill.”
“She was too emotional.”
Emily laughed.
“No.”
Linda stared.
Emily continued.
“You made me exhausted, then punished me for looking exhausted.”
Silence.
“You made Noah sick, then called me incompetent.”
Linda’s jaw tightened.
“You frightened Emma, then called her a liar.”
Ryan looked away.
“You threatened me, then called me unstable.”
Emily’s voice shook.
But stayed strong.
“I’m done carrying your explanations.”
One capo looked at Linda.
“How long?”
She shrugged.
“Long enough.”
I almost moved.
Instead I asked:
“How long exactly?”
“Five weeks with Noah.”
“And Emma?”
Linda smiled faintly.
“Children need correction long before adults notice.”
My blood went cold.
Emily stopped breathing.
Ryan whispered:
“Mom.”
Linda realized.
Too late.
“How long with Emma?”
She said nothing.
Emily stepped forward.
“How long?”
Ryan answered.
“Almost a year.”
The room went silent.
My granddaughter had been living under fear for a year while every family dinner looked normal.
That was the answer to my question from the pediatric suite.
May you like
How long?
Far longer than anyone should have survived alone.
