Chapter 1

My granddaughter covered her head before Linda’s second slap ever landed.

That was the detail I could not forget.

Not the prescription bottle.

Not Ryan’s fist.

Emma’s arms.

Four years old.

Curled beside the examination table with both hands protecting her skull as though her body already knew what came next.

I had entered the private pediatric suite early after a meeting two blocks away.

Emily stood near the window holding Noah.

Six months old.

Hot with fever.

Weak against her shoulder.

Emma pulled a bottle from inside her teddy bear.

Linda moved instantly.

“Give me that.”

She ripped it away.

Then slapped Emma.

Hard.

“I told you never to show anyone that bottle.”

The room went silent.

Dr. James Sterling took the bottle from Linda.

Turned it over.

His expression changed.

“Noah was never prescribed this.”

I crouched beside Emma.

Before I touched her, Ryan grabbed my shoulder.

“Stay out of my family.”

He shoved me.

Then punched me across the cheek.

I turned back slowly.

He swung again.

I slipped outside the punch and hit him once.

Ryan crashed through the rolling medical cabinet.

Linda rushed toward Emma.

Not to help.

Toward the teddy bear.

I tore her hand away and sent her backward into the privacy panels.

James held up the pharmacy record.

I took it.

Then looked at Ryan.

Linda.

Emily.

“How long have you been doing these horrible things?”

Ryan’s face changed.

Emma began crying.

Linda pointed at her.

“There. Look at that performance.”

I turned.

“She was slapped.”

“She was disobedient.”

“She hid medication.”

“Because I told her to.”

That confession came too easily.

Linda realized it a second later.

I looked at Emma.

“Why did Grandma tell you to hide it?”

She clutched the teddy bear.

Then whispered:

“Because Mommy wasn’t supposed to know what they put in Noah’s milk.”

May you like

Emily stopped breathing.

And Ryan finally looked afraid for a reason that had nothing to do with my fist.
